Hole In The Gearbox

Recommended Posts

EnglishRob

Hi folks,

When parking my car this evening the car appeared to slip out of gear and made a really bad clunking noise. The car would rev but not move at all.

A call to a mate of mine and 10 minutes later we found the gearbox has a nice hole in it now.

So... I'm not sure what to do. I realise I'm going to need a new gearbox either way but could this have screwed up the engine too?

I have an Mi16 engine in bits which has had the head done on it but I'm not sure if it would work, not to mention it needs putting together and I need the manifold etc.

Anyone got any ideas what the best course of action is?

I've had a quick look on eBay but all I can find are 1.6 engines and they're quite a way away from where I live. I've not found any 1.9 gearboxes or engines near by and without a car I'm a bit stuck.

Rob

i very much dought it will have damaged your engine at all, sounds just like gearbox has gone, maybe diff has shot a hole in casing without looking i dont know, 1.6 or 1.9 gearbox will fit which ever engine size you have

Hi Rob, sorry to hear your misfortune. :)

If i I was in your situation I'd be looking at either sourcing ar replacement box or fixing the existing, I have two boxes a 1.9 and a 1.6 unfortunetly both the input and output shafts and 3rd/4rd synchro are fecked on the 1.9. 1.6 box input shaft is fecked but both casings are OK.

If the engine was revving fine it would seem the engine is OK but best to remove the gearbox to verify.

As for the MI that is something to take time over and not be in a rush, Im still having a nightmare with my conversion just to get it to run smoothly. :(

Thanks Luggy, I got your PM and replied to it just now.

I'm rather reluctant to go for the Mi16 conversion just yet as I've been told it would probably be another £500 just for the bits to fit it. In the medium to long term I think I might need another 1.9 engine as my engine has an annoying oil leak when it runs, thing is, it at least did run.

Funny it happened. In 12 days time it'll be exactly 10 years since my first 1.9 205 did exactly the same thing (had that one 3 days and the gearbox and clutch went due to a bad oil leak). Hopefully this time around though it'll be a tad cheaper to get up and running again.

The engine certainly did seem to rev fine earlier. It's just when it was put in gear that it made a rattling noise.

Theres a good possibility you can get this resolved when you whip the gearbox off, theres a good chance that the crank seal is leaking, just remove the flywheel and get it replaced, get the flywheel skimmed and a new clutch. :(

As jonnies said, the Diff's explode quite often, They do damage the clutch sometime's, but other than that a replacement box will do just fine

That's okay then. It's more of an inconvenience than a worry at the moment. I'm glad it went when it did actually. Would it have been likely something that I did (say not getting the car completely in gear when parking), or is it just one of those things that happens with wear and tear? (I must admit, I was pushing the car a little bit earlier on to try and replicate the oil pressure problem, but probably not pushing it half as much as some of you guys might on track days - I'd chicken out when it got too fast!).

Is there any way of checking the clutch for damage when the gearbox is off?

Ahh I see. It did sound like they were simply rattling around in the box.
