Sheared Bolt...

Recommended Posts

jim205GTI

Right found a leak from the water pump so took it off and found a nick in the gasket doh must have done when i did the belt........ Done a new gasket and was putting it back in when I managed to shear a bolt.. doh!!

Luckily in some respects the bolt which sheared wasnt going into the block as such but into a tab ( if it can be called that) in the top left corner of the pump..... Not so lucky though is the fact it sheared almost level

Just posted this to see if anyone had any ideas for removal.... I had thought about getting a bolt from the other side ( the bolt hole goes straight through the tab) doing that up and hopefully pushing the broken bolt out but part of me doesn't think that will work ;) . Unfortunately I don't have access to welding gear and its slightly tight there anyway i think.

Any advice will be gratefully appreciated!!!!

:D

Cheers Jim

I think you mean the bolt arrowed ? Pictures on the piss as it was on a crane going in :)

Ive not tried winding a bolt in from the other side, but cant see it working, pretty sure they will just lock on each other. Im guessign you mean its snapped fluch withe the block..not the pump. In which case, as you said, its pretty fiddly to get to.

Id normally try and use a small pin punch and try and knock it round..providing it wasnt cross threaded it shouldnt be too tight. Not sure youll be able to get in there to do that though ?

Welding anything on the end would be pretty tight too i think. See what others have to say, but it might be a case of dropping the engine far enough to get a drill or punch or welder in there etc.

If it makes you feel any better, im not having much luck with bolts either. Snapped one of the m8 threads on the gearbox mount on saturday, didnt have the stuff to sort it, so took the car to work today, drilled it out. Sorted.

Put the mount back on, and snapped the other m8 thread :(

Wasnt even using an air gun, i learnt my lessons about my 205 and air tools long ago.

Goodluck.

I'm not 100 percent certain because its been a while, but i think of you support the front of the engine underneath by means of a jack - remove the top engine mount and lower the engine slowly until you can get straight access to the bolt.

If you can get good access (for a drill) then i would try and drill it out. using the hole for the bolt in the water pump as a centre guide and use a drill bit the same diameter as this hole (6 or 7mm?) and carefully drill a centre mark onto the flush head of the snapped bolt. This will give you a nice dimple to start to drill the bolt out.

Then i would remove the water pump and drill a small hole through the centre of the nicely centre marked bolt starting at about 3mm then up to maybe 4.5mm. if the drill bit doesn't just wind the old bolt right out then use an easy out.

lots of ways i guess , but thats how i'de tackle it
