Driveshaft Question

Recommended Posts

MerlinGTI

Just got off the motorway after doing 25 mile trip home from work and my os driveshaft snaps in two ! I replaced both driveshafts almost exactly 1 year ago with recon units from my local motorfactors. I dont want them again! lol

I was looking on GSF and they have the os shaft for £49.50, anyone bought these? any good? are they exchange units? what does 'GKN' stand for?

any advice on where to get quality units? (im not paying £200 each from pug tho! ;))

also those 2 bolts that hold the longer driveshaft in oplace with the funny heads, andyone got a part number please?

GKN is a large remanufacturing company that makes all sorts of transmission parts, the quality of the parts they produce is very good, short of brand new shafts from Peugeot they're probably the best you can get hold of IMO ;)

bolts - 3252 04 SCREW 7X100-44

self locking nut for said bolts - 6935 84 SELF LOCKG NUT 7X100-7-11

order 2 of each!

GSF are not bad. The price is for new units AKAIK they dont do exchange, all their stuff is new pattern parts. Good value for money IMO.

had a GKN one on mine (was fine) and it came from either GSF or ECP. they probably use various suppliers but if you stipulate GKN, should be OK

I bought a GKN driveshaft from GSF recently and it was exchange with the normal surcharge. And yeah specify GKN because they have a few different types.

On the drive shaft theme - sorry for the hijack - is it possible to replace the 'roller bearings' on the end of the drivers side shaft? I'm referring to the ones on the 3 branch bit on the engine end of the shaft that are protected by some kind of ring type thing - if you get my drift.

Only ask as I managed to pull mine out and lost some of these little bearings in the process.

Any help greatfully appreciated - otherwise it's off to GSF for the aforementionned replacements.

this happened to me aswell rupertfinch, had'nt much experiece with driveshaftswhen I was strippiing the 205! you can gather the wee pins up and put them back on the bearings apparently but i'm just going to replace my shafts as im rebuilding the whole car and might as well do it right :D

exactly the same thing happend to me, although i managed to gather all the roller bearings. best way to get them back in is to take the metal spring band off the bearing holder bit (the 3 prong thing), take off the top cover ring, then put the metal sleeve over, slot in all the needle bearings and then top ring on, and then the spring clip. and your sorted. i have done this but am sceptical about weather i may have got a bit of grit with the bearings or somthing, as although i cleaned them all there will prob be some.

so: are the center bearings the same in all driveshafts or are the gti ones different (i have the 1.9)? as if they are all the same i'll just pop to the scrappie and get one.

sorry for the hijack.

cheers

Tim
