Does This Look Right?

there is a seal there.

no harm fitting a new one though.

at the same time, i'd also fit a new o ring to the speedo drive housing, as they're prone to leak sometimes

The picture above if of the D/S driveshaft, where it goes into the diff. Shouldn't there be some kind of oil seal here - or is it OK?!

That toothed ring is the seal, an old one at that. Ive just replaced mine with a new OE one and they look a bit different now however the bell housing is the very bottom of that side of the engine/gearbox so you could have a leak from higher up making its way down.

Reading through your previous post, you say the car's recently had a clutch? It's possible the gearbox oil has drained from here whilst that was being done, and isn't actually leaking now. clean it off and check every few days. Also check that the 2x 11mm nuts that hold the intermediate driveshaft bearing in place are nice and tight (just follow the shaft towards the driver's side wheel if you don't know where it is yet) If it's loose the shaft can move slightly out of place and allow the oil to leak

Also worth checking the 'box isn't over-full with oil after the clutch change - been known to leak from the speedo drive if overfilled

Thanks for the responses guys.

Yeah, the car has just had a new clutch, so my initial reaction was the same as Steve's, but I thought that there was no harm having a look underneath just to check that there was nothing obvious. Good to know that this seal is OK.

I've read a lot about the speedo feed leaking, might change that seal, but as it's not dropping any fluid (what i mean is: the area is just oily, there aren't any oil stains on the ground after i park it up) as far as I can see I'm going to clear it up as best I can and see if any leak makes itself obvious.

Mickie - its deffo transmission oil, it smells quite distinctive.

for what its worth ive always had leaky gearboxs on 205's so i just replace both driveshaft oil seals , and i also reseal the diff cover, now my box is bone dry! :)
