Changing 8v Mains And Big End's In Situ?

Recommended Posts

MerlinGTI

my 85k 1.6 xu5ja is knocking from cold and im getting low oil pressure when hot.

Is it worth doing the main and big end bearings to try and rectify this?

Also can these be done with the engine still in the car and leaving the head in place? what I was thinking was take off the caps and tap the bearings round/out. Possible?

If you guys could walk me through/any tips etc.. it would be much appreacited ;)

Cheers

you'll need to take the timing belt and gearbox off to move the crank enough to get at the mains bearings (and the oil pump IIRC)

you'll need to remove the flywheel to get at the crank rear seal too.

okies, well i'll have a play :)

Anyone know the part numbers for the main bearings and the big end bearings?

Engine is an '88 1.6 XU5JA.

Just so I can cross reference them with what ever mr peugeot pulls out of his hat. To be honest I trust you guys more than a main dealer parts person.

Normally if it's knocking the crank will need checking and more often than not being ground to suit

was hoping for a quick fix tbh, cars my daily driver and I cant afford it to be out of action for more than a day or so. Its only a slight knock from cold and due to the low milage I was hoping just to swap them out.

I will keep an eye out for a complete bottom end near me and completely rebuild that ready to drop stright in methinks.

Would still like them part numbers though please guys :)

Having tried doing an head gasket in a weekend - which i'm sure you know is a lot easier that a bearing change! - i wouldn't recommend doing major work to you daily driver in a hurry! A hell of a lot of stress!

I reckon you're better off getting a new block and dropping that in, as long as things go OK you should be able to do it easy in a weekend. Lets you do a proper job, if you're rushing you'll bodge it!

I'd say it would be easier to do a complete engine swap to a known workign engine, I just had my 92k XU5 Gti spank the headgasket pretty impressively, was quciker to source a complete engine and just swap them over.
