Oil On The Clutch

Recommended Posts

swordfish210

Hi. For a reason that is neither here not there so i'm not going to go in to it ;) , there is a lot of transmission oil on my clutch. Is there any particular way to remove the contamination from the friction plate that anyone on here knows of? Thanks. Mark

cltuch and brake cleaner usually does the trick, spray and wipe.

that is what i was thinking. I did hear (althought i can't remeber where) that putting a friction plate in a pot of water and boiling it worked wonders? Discuss and feel free to tell me that it's a crock of s**t ;)

If its a lot of oil, i always replace them. Brief exsposure is ok, but if its soemthing like input shaft seal gone, and cluth has been soaked in oil for weeks etc i dont chance it.

Once the oil is embedded in to the friction material, it can degrade it. Causing it to slip, or break up. Same as wheel cylinders can knacker brake shoes when they go unnoticed.

Thats not to say you wont be able to clean it up, and it will work fine. But i never take the chance.

Well the clutch cost me £130 and has covered about 8 miles.... so i'll probably just clean it ;)

It should be ok cleaned up, not sure if it will be if it has been driven with oil on it though.
