Are These The Right Parts – Arm Shaft Q

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

I am swapping arm shafts on a beam and as such thought I would order the necessary bits, I went on to the service box and saw this:

I duly ordered ‘plug towball’ 517908 and 517905. Which I thought would be the right bits. I want to collect them from Pug today and got these:

I was expecting something metal and useful not a few bits of plastic for my £10. Are these the right bits or have just bought some useless tat? If I have what do I need to get when swapping shafts over.

The beam is from a 1.9 GTi btw.

Thanks

Jonny

Useless tat. I've never seen those before, god knows what they are for.

The beam bearings are listed as a "SOCKET" I believe.

IIRC those plugs will be to plug the end of the arm shaft on base models where an ARB is not fitted.

They are the plugs to block up the whole in the arm shaft when used on a non-GTi beam without the anti-roll bar. 5179 05 goes on the outside in place of the anti-roll bar lever. 5179 08 goes in the other (inside) end of the arm shaft.

Hopefully, you can take them back?

James.

Boll*cks, never mind, you live and learn.

I can get my money back on two of the four bits.

So will I need any new parts if taking a shaft out of a trailing arm and replacing it with another ‘good’ one?

Only two of the four.......

So what will I need, apart from common sense?

usually just the Stainless steel "cup" and whatever is required for the tube, normally both bearings and the seal if the shaft is buggered.

For the avoidance of any doubt (because I am thick) what are the part numbers of said parts.

I am planning on replacing the outer bearings ( 513249) and Inner bearings ( 513145 )

Are the seals (515408 ) fitted whilst the shafts are off the trailing arms?

yes, just pressed into the metal sleeve on the end of the tube.

dont forget to set the clearance between the seal and the cup, as illustrated here

Looks like you have pressed the outer metal sleeve too far in, afaik it should not be bottomed out.

its not bottomed out but I did push that one a touch too far, still holds the seal fine.
