What Is Involved With Changing Gearbox Type

Recommended Posts

slow_matt

Hi,

I have searched but I cannot find the answer,

What is involved in going from a 1.9 lift reverse gearbox to a normal 1.6.

Currently mine is crunching going into 3rd and 4th and 5th gear is too tall for much use. My commute is 25miles each way on deserted B roads so I use 5 twice each way!

Cheers

Matt

You'll need the later type clutch pedal and cable, and later type release bearing (all Be3 stuff)

You coudl put a gearknob top with the over 5th reverse bit on so when mates use the car it doens't confuse them, and can remove the lift up reverse cable.

Then it's just a box swap.

If you're doing that little lot, worth putting a 1.6 flywheel on at the same time it's lighter than the 1.9 item and helps the car go a bit better too.

What exactly do you mean by normal 1.6 gearbox?

If you are staying with the same Be1 (lift up reverse) 1.6 gearbox the Gearbox swap from the articles on the main website will cover the job from start to finish.

If you are looking to wap to the later Be3 gearbox with reverse behind fifth gear then you need to swap the bits as mentioned by James.

Graham.

Hi Fellas,

Thanks for getting back to me, yup I'd be going from BE1 to BE3.

I've ordered a new clutch kit, release bearing should be in the kit I guess.

I've booked four days off, should be enough!

Cheers

Matt

the be3 clutch pedal has a hook at the end rather than a hole drilled though the end. i was going to dremel the end from my pedal, to match the design of the be3 pedal. decided to buy a new pedal from peugeot, £30.

Tried the dremel /hacksaw approach, didn't work. But 30 quid? - don't you have a scrappy near you?

I got one for a fiver from the srappy. Dont forget to get a BE3 cable slow_matt. I cant remember how much that was? up to you if you want to risk second hand. But its a waste on a new clutch in my opinion. Be3 gear knobs appear on ebay all of the time.

Its not a bad job to do.
