Jack

Hi chaps,

My 205 used to have an alarm siren fitted to the inner wing where the jack should mount. I've now wanged the alarm and wish to put the jack back where it should be (rather than rolling around in the boot smashing the f*** out of everything). I've got a half-scissor jack and the bolt, but do I need anything else?

It seems a bit crude for the jack just to bolt down against my freshly painted inner wing...?!

Thanks (again),

Rob.

Nope, thats it. If i were you though i'd put some sort of padding etc over you fresh paint.....maybe a plastic tray or something...:)

the original jack would sit against a few dense foam pads near the strut tower.

Usually as WP says, but those foam pads always fall off, or just hold water and help corrosion! :)

I had mine wrapped in a football boot sized leather bag thing with 2 holes in for the bolt on one car, also had it in a similar bag tied to one side of the boot. Or you can use the boss that's supposedly under the passenger rear seat?

I will be putting in an order with VWP in the next few days which will include a metre of self adhesive foam pad. I won't need all of it, so I could send you a bit if you want. Then you can just stick it to the jack in any points that are likely to contact the paint.

You could just stick it to the paint, but like Baz says, I'd be concerned about it holding moisture and promoting rust.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm glad I'm not missing anything fundamental.

And thanks for the offer GLP. I've got loads of that already so I'll try to fashion something subtle to do the job without creating too much of a trap for water.

Cheers, Rob.

Where does everyone with mi/gti-6' conversion secure their jack?

Recently, mine has just been in the boot, wrapped in my work coat, but every so often it will break free and skid around the boot. Im thinking of drilling a hole in the side of the boot somewhere, welding a nut over it (well... chemical metal or something), and bolting the jack there.

EDIT: How does it fit under the rear seats in air con models as mentioned above? Was there a recess for it?

It doesn't go under the rear seat, it goes under the driver's seat. There is a cross member there that the subframe bolts to, so Pug added a hole in it for the jack to screw in to. I don't think 'normal' GTI models have it, but it would be easy to do.

But why do you mention the Mi16/GTI6? It shouldn't make a difference (or are you talking about the fact that a lot of people put their relay box where the jack goes?).

Yeah, my relay box is where the jack should be.

Suppose under the seat would be best to keep it out of sight

sorry to bump an old thread

id like to put my jack under the seat, but when i looked earlier it seems that the jack is too big. the seat wont go back down with it underneath. do the A/C cars have diffrent/smaller jacks?

i havent fitted a boss yet but it looks to me like i'd need to remove the carpet and underlay for it to have any chance of fitting.

i hope this isnt a stupid question, thanks
