Materials Suggestions For Caliper Mounts

Seeing as I gotta machine some mounts up for my Willwoods, I got some blocks of aluminium from work free :)

I can only guess this is what the old ones were made of.

Alu would be strong enough wouldn't it??

Well I can find out tomorrow, but it'll be at least marine grade, if that narrows it down. :)

Depends how thick the mounts are, but 6082T6 (otherwise known as HE30), or, if the mounts are quite thin, 7075T6, should do the job.

Hmmm, I donno if "Dave the metal guy" will know that kind of specs.

 

Will try though. Will the grade determine how thin I can go on the mounts?

 

Looking at the old mounts (I say old, the ones which were designed for my old Fiesta :( ), they appear to most of us to be anodized aluminium. Don't particularly want mild steel as the mild we get is of v.poor quality, the s/s is too chufin hard and heavy and we get decent alu cos the officers like it :)

Yes, along with their overall resistance to fatigue.

And if "Dave the metal guy" doesn't know those aluminium grades maybe he should be "Dave the dole-man"? :(:)

If you're not 100% sure you should not do this!

Ask someone who knows for really sure as the wrong grade may be ok for the first year but fail horrendously later (due to the fact that alloy can crack over time if not dimensioned correctly!). Avoid using alloy in lower wishbones and front brakes if you don't know exactly what you're doing or you're driving 100% on track (that will limit any unpleasant consequences mainly to you alone).
