humanz 3 Posted July 24, 2008 Ok, so I'm still in the process of setting up my GTI which was reshelled into an XS. But I've only now realised that the XS has no rear brake compensators fitted, which is has me concerned, as I'll be using a 1.9 engine instead of my original 1.6. As it stands right now, the car has brake lines in the normal 1.6 GTI fashion (two lines up front, one line to the rear split just before the brake drums), only there is no 1.6 compensator fitted, just the previously existing XS brake pipe running straight to the rear. Brakes and discs are bog standard. Should I use the 1.6 brake compensator and the necessary piping (which will also mean trying to correctly mount the compensator and bracket at the correct angle)? Or should I just do without it? Or is it possible to fit 1.9 compensators after the single piping splits for the two rear brake drums? In that case, all I'd have to purchase are two compensators. You see, eventually, I'd like to convert to 1.9 GTI calipers and rear discs and from the diagrams in Servicebox, it looks like the 1.9 rear compensators are usually fitted near the front of the car. Peetypug 5 Posted July 24, 2008 (edited) you've opened a can of worms now. You'll get a few different answers. Some saying they'll be fine some saying they wont. I dont know what condition mine are in on my 1.9 so i'm removing them as i'm fitting new lines and gti6 brakes up front. I've been told it'll be fine without them, but also told that i'll need them! Good luck ;D Forgot to add, when i had my xs i had 1.9 brakes on the front with no compensators and that was fine for the 4 years i was driving it Edited July 24, 2008 by sorrentopete
