Car Wont Start This Morning!

Jumped in, turned the key and it just turned over and over. I couldnt hear the fuel pump or relay in the engine, do fuel pumps just break over night?

It was fine when I parked it up last night. Any ideas?

Mine just died overnight so it is possible. Could be the fuel pump relay though - under the dash on the right hand side.

I remember something hanging down in that area when I swapped the ECU. Although its all been bodged by some alarm fitter in its past.

Does the relay click when its turning over? There was no smell of petrol like you would expect after alot of cranking

Yeah, the relay should click when turning on. If you disconnect the plug to the fuel pump (under the back seat) and take a multimeter to it, you should be getting a 12v feed when priming. If you have voltage then your fuel pump is dead.

This gets even stranger.

I got home, finished early to fix the thing! tried to start it, and it wouldnt fire.

I went and got my timing light to check for a spark, and checked the fuel pump fuse, stuck the strobe on and turned it over and it started!

It runs fine, but i still cant hear the pump or relay...

Which engine management is that one ? Jetronic or Motronic ?

I found that in the case of Motronic car , you can't hear the fuel pump priming .. whereas on Jetronic car this depends on relay manufacturer (with one relay brand the system will prime when ever you turn the key , with other it'll be just after the system depressurize during the hot day or long standing ..)

Unplug the main fuel feed pipe from the injection rail , put it in small container and then try cranking (ask your mate to help you out with this ..) .. so that you can see if you're getting fuel during the cranking ..

Anyway if you have spark could be dodgy fuel pump relay :D (tachometric relay in the case of Jetronic car..) open him up and inspect internals for burnt diodes , loosen dry joints etc. ... in most cases they can be repaired , cheap and easily by yourself ..

Rgs !

Sorry to bump an old topic, but it wont start again!

I've checked and have,

Fuel

Spark

And its turning over, but wont fire?

How can I test the injectors are working properly?

by fuel do you mean the pump runs? If it does but it doesnt actually inject then first suspect is the lead from the distributor to the ign amp, would account for first post as well as disturbing it when connecting a strobe would of caused it to fire again

To test injectors to rule the wire out stick a multimeter on voltage across the pins of one injector and crank it. The readings should dance about on the meter if its firing the injectors and the lead is OK, if not then I'd say its the lead at fault

Could be ignition amp  i've been chasing once malfunction of "never ending cranking/cold starting" of my car , i replaced tested cleaned checked adjusted each and every single component on the car one by one , none of that attempts didn't work.. in the end the cure was new/spare ignition amp - replaced it with one spare Bosch amp and no more cold starting problems since then

Hope this helps !
