Weird Noise

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just wondered if anyone could spare a thought on this on.

Just changed my driveshafts, as one was knocking as i wasnt too sure which one it was, so i changed em both. sorted. however before and after i had swapped the driveshafts a weird noise had devloped from the passanger front suspension area, its a sort of werrrrr clunck type noise (not the best description i know), but its present as i set off, ie as i apply the power and bring up the clutch. its also present during hard cornering.

i am thinking anti roll bar related, would i be correct? i replaced a drop link not long ago though.

You could try the gearbox mount see if any of the fasteners are loose. I was getting a very loud cracking/ clunking noise when doing pretty much the same things you have mentioned. Only takes 10-20mins to check and like me you may find that 2 outer bolts are slack.

ok checked the gearbox mount this afternoon and they were a bit loose so tightened then up, anyway must of been using a too big socket wrench and managed to shear one of the small 13m bolts clean off. lol great one. so spent this rest of the evening drilling the bugger out and ended up putting a new bolt with a nut through. took it for a test drive and still vibrates/clunks during set off. had a good luck under there whilst it was on the axel stands and nicked all the subframe nuts too. what i am thinking now is its the anti roll bar bushes, as really its the only bit i havent replaced. both droplinks, wishbones, driveshafts, steering rack, top mounts, track rod ends have all been done. if i take a drop link off and take it for a test drive without it on, therefore making the anti roll bar not in use, is that ok to do? if the noise goes, surely i am on to a winner?

Yep that is ok to do. It's quite common to remove one drop-link for wet track days or in the forests (depending on you driving preference of course).

It would make sense to remove the drop-link on the passenger side in your case though!

James.

Its annoying when you forget you've taken one off and it fails the MOT, I was properly kicking myself as I had to pay a retest fee and it didn't fail on anything else... :)

Sounds like you need a 'friendly' MOT man. "ooh nice rose-joints... here's your ticket"! :(

Nope, just a 'national' tyre and exhaust place, surprisingly!

Hi,

Was this issue ever sorted as it's sounding exactly as my car. I've just changed my complete wishbones and it did chuff all.

Cheers

Matt

hey guys! only just got round to looking at the problem today.

ive been putting up with the noise for a bit and i had the car mot'd recently so i knew that it couldnt be serious. Anyway it turned out that the problem was the exhaust. everytime i pulled away the noise appeared and what was happening was the exhaust downpipe was hitting the subframe and hence making a few random noises. backing off the throttle also had a similar affect. Anyway after a bit of exhaust rearrangement the problem was fixed.

might be worth checking out if you have similar noises before going down the road of replacing suspension parts like i was going too!
