chrisj21 2 Posted July 21, 2008 So my gear selection problem still continues. after putting the new set of Miles' gear rods on tonight (thanks miles, quality product) they have unfortunatly not solved my problem. although the gear change is alot more positive and instantly better i still cant select reverse without a couple of attempts and alot of crunching. i did previously have problems with second but the rods seem to have solved this. Could it be the syncro mesh ( i think thats rite) in which case is this a rebuild/replacement I have a new clutch ready and cable but im not sure this would solve the problem Any help appreciated Chris
philfingers 5 Posted July 21, 2008 will it go in ok with the engine switched off, if so then could be syncro's or the clutch. Maybe you can adjust the clutch up?
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 21, 2008 Reverse doesn't have a syncro hub, well unless it's a later S16 type of box etc, Might be worth checking the adjustment of the clutch, you should have around 5mm of free play and the pedal should be slightly higher than the brake pedal. I'd also check the box is bolted to the engine as this can lead you up the garden path too
kyepan 291 Posted July 22, 2008 also go round and count your gear box bolts, making sure they are torqued up, they have a habit of undoing them selves, leading to less clutch travel, dragging clutch, crunching reverse and difficult to engage 3rd. do that before you start buying replacement clutches anyhow. where is the biting point currently, on the floor, or middle or top of the pedal travel? chrisj21 2 Posted July 22, 2008 Goes in to every gear fine with the engine off. do i adjust the clutch from the engine bay end of the cable? and do i tighten the nuts up tighter of loosen them? thanks
timb1046 1 Posted August 14, 2008 loosen the bolts to "tighten" the clutch. hope that makes sence.
chrisj21 2 Posted August 14, 2008 I took off the gearbox to change the clutch in the end, i found that the springs in the friction plate had all broken so im hoping this was the problem.time will tell. Chris
evojay71 0 Posted August 14, 2008 This may sound stupid and a simple thought and a very common problem but are the plastic bushes worn in the bottom of the gearstick??? I had that problem with my first 205 GTI many years ago and it was very hard to select certain gears, after they were changed it was as good as new.
