Dave_McC 0 Posted July 20, 2008 I'm finally reassembling my Mi16 having had the crank reground, and with new bearings. I've plastigauged the bearings and have measured 3 thou on the mains and 2 thou on the big ends. Does this sound ok? Haynes doesn't seem to quote what they should be and I can't find them on here. Cheers Dave
marksorrento205 80 Posted July 29, 2008 I asked this question to a firm near me who rebuild engines esp. aston martins and he said 2 - 2.5 thou. However martin at prd said even smaller. When I fitted standard shells to my mi I had 2 - 2.5 and it sounds ok with good oil pressure.
Dave_McC 0 Posted July 29, 2008 Cheers I checked with Matt at QEP when I was down there last week picking up some bits - as a rule of thumb he said 1 thou clearance per inch journal size - so should ideally be nearer 2 than 3 thou for both mains and big ends, but 3 thou for the mains would be ok. fletch 0 Posted July 30, 2008 I asked the same question last week and got that response which put my mind at ease when I was deliberating over 0.01mm!
silent_running 0 Posted July 30, 2008 I asked the same question last week and got that response which put my mind at ease when I was deliberating over 0.01mm! I'm just doing mine on my Subaru EJ20 and the clearance limit on the mains is 0.035mm, which is what, nearer 1 thou than 2? The actual recommended clearance is definitely around 1 thou. How that relates to other cars though I don't know.
fletch 0 Posted July 31, 2008 Thats just over 1 thou yes.
Dave_McC 0 Posted August 1, 2008 and scooby engines are sensitive to the big end bearings - spinning No.3 from memory usually just after an oil change - I had one for 6 years - loved it but paranoid every time the oil was changed. Dave
