ok i read your reply and can see what you mean.

I did not use any spacer with my sump, but i drilled the hole for the dowel on the block, also had to drill out the hole's for the 2 long allen key screws. (ive used a 10mm drill bit but it is not big enough, have to go buy a bigger 1 tomorrow), also going to a specialist screw/bolt manufacturer tomorrow to buy 2 more bolts, as 2 from the mi16 sump do not fit (the other 2 allen key ones).

USE the spacer mate! i didnt, and im Half sure thats why i had an engine failure...

the spacer plate braces the block slightly, as it has a cross brace in it..

personally I think the block stiffener isn't a lot of use as a stiffener. As it is the bolt holes aren't a snug fit, so the stiffener may well be stiff but the block could well move around. The bolts aren't tight on the grand scheme of things.

Your engine failure pee vee, what happened to it. Oil starvation as with most Mi's or something different.

I'll be able to comment on my mods if I ever get it in a running!

definitly not oil starvation mate no. ive not had trouble with that,

hi rpm, i think. (was using standard 405 3 row managment)

TBH im not totally convinced it was block movement, but something strange happened,

it cracked/snapped the skirt off one of the pistons, and the liner.

and as it hit the con rod on the way down, made a hole in the block... DOH!

there could well of been a crack in the piston skirt before hand,, but the neither me or the 2 guys at the machine shop picked up on it if there was.

The brace may not look like its going to do much but at the end of the day PSA used it for a reason. It would have been cheaper to just have a spacer with no cross bits in it...

Yes agreed, yet the difference in stiffness betweeen an alloy sump and a steel pan are massive and they used both!

Bah.. didn't use the spacer on mine either, didn't see much point in keeping it and having to expend the pickup. Phil did you use the GTI6 bolts for the sump? If so you shouldn't have had to drill those holes for the long bolts.

can't remember but you have to with a spacer otherwise they only engage by 2-3 threads.
