Mi16 Running Very Badly

Recommended Posts

Ryan

The engine started straight away and ran normally, but then after about 2 mins it cut out. When I started it again it ran like crap. It seems to be running on 2-3 cylinders. It idles between ~650-1000, but never manages to actually cut out. Pressing the throttle has no effect at all, it just carries on trying to idle even if you floor it. Although the revs do occasionally randomly shot up to ~2000 for a couple of seconds, but that seems to happen whether you press the throttle or not.

The engine was rebuilt 2000 miles ago, and I've had no trouble with it until now.

That sounds like a problem with the AFM, mine was the same when I forgot to connect it up!

I was thinking AFM too, or an earth problem, but it was dark and I couldn't have a proper look.

I'm pretty sure it's electrical though, as the car was perfectly fine beforehand, and then cut out cleanly - just as if you'd turned the ignition off.

if it's the afm you can cause it to struggle further and sometimes die by suddenly opening the throttle to screw the mixture, not saying its not the AFM but you can generally get it to rev a bit if you're really gentle. Also it will take a while to clear after you reconnect it or sort out the connections.

it's probably worth checking over all the ignition components while you're there.

Assuming you're running motronic management, check out the caps sticky it's a life saver.

I've had a quick look at it this afternoon, and typically it started first time, idles fine, and runs as perfectly as it did before. I let it warm up for a few minutes too, but the problem never returned.

AFM seems fine, dizzy cap fine, wiggled all the connections, but couldn't get the problem to return. I'll take it for a longer drive tomorrow.

ICV possibly sticking?

ICV seems OK. I squeezed the hose and the revs dropped, and when the car is running properly the idle is rock solid.

I'm going to go out for a drive later and see what happens. I'm currently thinking it's the ignition amp, but it's hard to diagnose anything when I can't get the problem to return.
