Making My Own Rose-Jointed Gear Linkages

Recommended Posts

Ahl

Ive been thinking about this for a while now as the prices for a full rose-jointed gear linkage set are ridiculous.

I was speaking to me mum earlier (she works for a bearings distributor) and it turns out that she can get me any size or type of rose-joint I want for pittance! Getting rod to fit them to is no problem either.

The only hard bit it seems will be modifying the gear levers and brackets on the car to allow the fitment of the rose-jointed rods. Should be some cutting and drilling involved.

Anyway, I'll keep you updated as to how I get on. ;)

Can someone explain "what rose-jointed" means and what the advantages are?

Rose Joint was originally a trade name for a type of spherical bearing, people now tend to call all spherical bearings and rod ends, rosejoints, a bit like vacuum cleaners get called Hoover's.

Rod ends are manufactured to very close tolerances, and depending on the type used are very hard wearing. The advantage of using Rod ends on the gear linkage will be that they will give a very precise movement and will not wear like the crappy ball and socket that is used on the 205.

Here is a link to one of the biggest Rod end manufactures aurora

To be honest producing a rose jointed gear linkage will do bugger all to your gear change. Tighten up all the linkages etc. I had a look at the play in mine today and they are absolutely all over the place.

It's the wear in the OEM balljoints that's the problem, since a lot are used for pushing and pulling the play in them will cause slack in the linkage, leading to a rather wobbly gearshift. Rose joints should sort it, with the advantage that you could play with the lengths of the levers and shorten the lever throw in both axes considerably if you wanted to. I thought of doing this, let me know how you get on ;)
