miamichris 9 Posted July 14, 2008 So...I was stripping my power steering rack today as part of my rebuild, it needs painted & i've new track rods, t.r ends and boots to go on it. After taking off the old rods and boots, theres a bolt attached to a collar which goes round the rack to hold the ram in place.. This stops me from getting the small boot (which i've wrecked now ) off that covers the track rod balljoint..so how do I go about replacing this small boot if I can't get the collar/bolt off?! This small boot did'nt come in my boot kit so i'm guessin i've to buy it seperately or something? sorry I havent a pic, I can get one if I don't get it sorted when I go back to this job tomorrow! Also, removed the servo today to give it a bit of paint...3hours later, skinned knuckles and many swearwords I managed to get the nuts off from behind the dash
B1ack_Mi16 67 Posted July 14, 2008 theres a bolt attached to a collar which goes round the rack to hold the ram in place Its not possible to separate the bolt/collar thingy from the rack itself, it can't be disassembled any more than shown below. The small boot I usually just loosen with a flat screwdriver and a hammer, but it may be hard to get it off without destroying it. Now yours is already destroyed, just get it off and unscrew the inner rods from the rack with a big plier. When assmbling, fasten inner joints to rack, then put the small boot before you mount the outer track rods.
miamichris 9 Posted July 14, 2008 thats as far as i've disassembled mine, didn't think I could go any further! thanks mate, I'll do what you said there, I figured thats what I'd have to do..now I'll have to head off tomorrow to source a new small boot! Cheers, Chris
