Quick Stupid Q About Rear Speakers

Recommended Posts

4evernewbie

Having found that mine are non-existant, what size are the speakers that live behind the gti badges?

And also, has anyone any good recomendations about what speakers to get for there?

They'll be powered from the head unit, as will the speakers in the doors but I'll have a sub in the boot and 3 way components in the parcel shelf (I know it's not the best place to put them, but there's nowhere else for them to go if I want to keep the car looking standard) powered by a 4ch amp (2 channels obviously being bridged for the sub).

So, I want some all round good speakers (bear in mind I cut the amp signal off when I go camping in the summer so I can listen to tunes from the car without having to run the amp; therefor draining the battery) which won't sound s*ite when played next to the 3ways, for about £50.

Hope all that made sense!!!!

Any ideas anyone??

Paul.

go for alpine or infinity..they should sound crystal clear. they're also usually a reasonably low RMS aswell so should work nice off the headunit. stay away from makes like 'fli' and 'mutant' because they are utter s*ite...

you're going to be using the front and rear speakers with the headunit...

you've bridged an amp for the sub...

and as for the 3ways components you have..what are you planning on running these off? another amp?

i'd suggest a power cap' if you're getting another one,or the music could skip notes and the headlights/interior lights etc are likely to dim down

..you shouldnt be worried about the new items blending with the 3 ways. spend a couple of minutes playing with the settings while the boot is closed on about 3/4 headunit volume and you'll get it sounding just right

I was planning on running the rear three ways from the 4ch amp. I already have the 3ways and the amp, so I 'd thought I'd do the logical thing.

Right-e-o, I'll check out ebay and get on the case of alpine or infinity.

Thanks guys!

I'm not saying that using your three way speakers in the shelf will not improve the overall sound to yor system that that you are planning, however IMO I would not use them. You can get more than enough mid to trebble using two way coxial speakers mouted in the original speaker locations. To add to that unless you either buy or convert your shelf into a stealh shelf they are and advertisment for the nick one get on free, oh and there just happens to be an amp and sub in the boot too I'm sure the owner didn't want them either!

I have personally done two very simialr installs into both my GTIs running a four channel amp to the four corners and a mono amp running two ohm into two 10" into the boot.

Below is my current set up, and in my previous GTI I used exactly the same amps, but some Vibe subs instead. Although I am tempted to use either 4 10" of 2 DVC12" as have the amps still left over from the other car which I sold last year.

Not exactly on topic, you'll really be wasting those XR's if you put them in the rear shelf. They are a very high quality set of components (mine were £450 new), and deserve to be your main speakers up front.

I had mine mounted fairly discreetly in the doors and A pillars, with a 10" Image Dynamics sub in the boot (quality not quantity) and after a bit of setting up the sound was pretty remarkable for such a small and ICE-unfriendly car. Pretty good staging and imaging, great tonality, and the kind of bass punch that you felt in your ribcage. Sticking them in the parcel shelf where they'll just flap about, do very little, and play into the back of your head is sacrilege in my opinion. And of course you risk them being killed by the sub as it tries to fire them out of the shelf.

Oh, and don't buy a power cap whatever you do. They are worse than useless, and the only benefit they give is lining the pockets of the salesmen and marketing people that have managed to convince everyone that they are the best thing since sliced bread :( Have a look at a real quality system, and you won't see one in sight anywhere.

So my recommendation - buy anything that will fit in the holes at the back (no point spending over £30ish if they're only running off the headunit), turn them off in normal use (using the fader control), and only run them when you want to save battery power by not running your amp.

After i'd put a third amp in, the headlights would dim, the backlight of the clocks would dim..the electric windows would be slower. Then the treble would start cutting out at half volume because the sub was having to deal with particular basslines. I went to maplin.. payed £40 for a 1 farad power cap and twenty minues later it was all sorted. It never cut out again and the lights never dimmed again

they are far from the best thing since sliced bread, it didnt completley transform the sound but what do you expect. if I was to ever put a loud sound system back into my car i'd have no hesitation about going and buying one

proper charging systems is whats needed there not a cap.

paint guy is right on the money a 2.1 system is by far the best setup for any car spend the money properly and spend it once on a small but very high quality system and you wont be sorry,

as for components look at the Jl Tr series for a mid priced speaker there pretty good bang for buck
