Noooooooooo!

Last night I made a bit of a booboo.

Having removed my std inlet manifold as part of fitting my carbs I decided rather than loose the manifold nuts I would put them on the studs for safe keeping. Well turns out it wasnt that safe if you are a clumsy tw@ like me. I dropped one of the nuts and it bounced down the open inlet port......of course it was the valve that was fully open at the time and I now have a M8 nut in the cylinder.

I really cant be arsed to take the head off again (last time it was a snapped plug). I was able to get to it and pick it up with my magnet tool via the plug hole but the nut is bigger than the hole and would come out.

Anyone got any bright ideas???? Other than for me to not touch cylinder heads (thought of that one immediately)

All I can think of right now, is to put the cam belt off, then set inlet valve at that cylinder to fully open, and also bring the piston as high as possible.

Then use two copper wires (make hook on one), and then put the one with the hook in chamber through inlet port and try to assist with the other via spark plug hole... might just work.

It's a bit of a gynaecologist job :)

Cheers

It just so happens that the valve is almost fully open with the piston fairly high in the bore anyway so that may be a plan mate.

I have just super glued a small magnet to the end of a flexible nylon rod which I hope may bend round the valve and into the chamber but there is a danger there that the magnet may come off and stick the bore.....then I would be knackered. I will try the wire hook method first.

you can buy tools which essentially are a mounted magnet, at least that way you can me be sure that your not going to loose anything more in your cylinder.

Or, you could take it to a garage which has a bore scope, if you put that through the spark plug hole, then you would be able to see what you are doing !! would make life a lot easier.

Good luck matey

How about...:) if You take inlet cam out, take lifter out and press one inlet valve in. This way You open the port hole a lot more and You can probably easily reach the nut. Then just slide the valve back in. Maybe...just maybe :)

Will the nut come up through the spark plug hole? Then use one of those extendable magnet pens.

Mad. :)

I have one of the magnet pen things which I was able to pick it up with, but being an M8 its 13mm and annoyingly the spark plug hole is M12 I think. I could get at it but not remove it, very annoying!

I think given the choice I would prefer to lift the head off than remove the cam and drop a valve.....dont really want to do either.

The super glue hasnt convinced me its strong enough. I now have a coil spring that we use as a retainer at work with a magnet very securly fixed in the end. I have tested it and there is no way the magnet is strong enough to pull itself free. I should be able to feed that round the valve into the cylinder and hopefully reach the nut.

A borescope would be a great help and we do have one at work......but its worth £5000 and I dont know if I want to borrow it :)

Cheers Daza!

They are pretty good bits of kit. But it would be more than my job is worth to damage the thing. If I took it back broken I can guess were it would end up!

Next time you are doing work to the engine with the inlet removed it may be a good idea to stuff either some rags or scrumple some kitchen roll into the port. That way if you drop anything it wont go down the hole. Just remember to remove them before refitting the manifold :)

Ben has just sent me a text with the following message

" The nylon with a magnet glued to it worked a treat the nut is out!!!"

So all is good news !!!! :)

Yep, I found 10 minutes before I went away for the weekend to have a go at it and it worked. Back on track with fitting the carbs now!

Cheers for all the ideas chaps.

PS - agree on stuffing rags down the inlets, will do that next time!
