Xu10j4rs Crankshaft Position?

I'm in the process of checking over a Gti-6 motor that I've recently bought and when I turned the crankshaft to line up the three timing holes, I found they don't all line up together. The two camshaft holes match up perfectly but the crankshaft pulley hole is nowhere near (infact it's almost 180 deg out).

 

I then started to check what the pistons were doing. In the above state, the pistons are all level, at mid stroke (which is how the Mi16 is set and how I'd expect them to be). But the crank pulley marker is way out. Moving the crank to its position (I know the crank turns twice for each cam turn) means the cam holes are way off, and the pistons are two up and two down. I took the pulley off to check its location on the key, that's ok.

 

So, what's going on here?

Anyone who has taken the head off a Gti-6 motor, how do the pistons sit?

Is the pulley the correct one?

Is the timing just way off?

quite a common problem this one, the outer section of the pulley is bonded onto the centre via a rubber ring, these perish and hence the hole loses its position, very common situation arises where people do not check as you have done whether the timing holes line up before proceeding, they then set the timing with the buggered pulley and render an engine (or at least 8 valves) scrap.

 

best to lock the cams, then remove the crank pulley and mark the sprocket with tippex or similar, source a replacement pulley and see if the pin will slot in, it shouldn't be too far off at all (may be a few mm off either way due to belt wear)

I don't know if the piston position is the same on the Gti-6 engine as it is one the XU5/9's but with the timing pins in the right place (both crank & cam) the pistons are all level in the bores.

 

IIRC Miles sells solid alloy lower pulleys to prevent this happening in future for around the same price (or possibly cheaper) than a new replacement pulley from pug.

Yes, that's what I was expecting. So the timing looks to be set correctly then.

Pistons are level when pinned, as Welshpug says it will be a 'slipped' pulley. This pulley has cause numerous engines to be timed up wrongly resulting in expensive damage. Replace the pulley and youre good to go.

use an 8v solid crank pulley to time up a gti6 engine, you can set timing that way then just put original gti6 pulley back on. Seems a waste of money buying a new pulley just to check timing

there is that method, but do you really want that wayward outer section to come loose?

 

I'm sure you can imagine the consequences of that happening, a replacement pulley AFAIK is only available through RichW/Lynx engineering, Miles does the S16 type that is attaches with 4 M8 bolts to a central hub, both ar around or less than a replacement from peugeot.
