Guest burt Posted July 8, 2008 HELP! I live in Holland, and currently own a 17 yo 309GTI, that has done in excess of 230k kilometers - i have owned it for around 10 months. The pressure gauge has NEVER been above 2 bar, and obviously drops to just above the red light, when the oil gets hot - but the light has NEVER come on! late last week, i noticed there is a HUGE oil leak!!...so i pop around the Pug Dealer in Aalphen, an the mechanic has a poke around and diagnose's a head gasket failure!:frust: so, my options?... the car is only worth 1400 euro's - (its TOTALLY original - no "boy racer bits" / body kits or even a bean can exhaust! Peugeot dealer wants in excess of 800 euro's to fix the head gasket i know that i can get the whole engine stripped and rebuilt for around 1100 euro's by a specialist south of Amsterdam - his cost of Head Gasket repair is gonna be in the region of 450 euro's.... this now is my dilema.... do i.... A - just go for the HG Repair by the specialist, or, B, get him to do the total strip-down and rebuild?? is the re-build going to be the extra money in the long run! i s'pose another option would be to sell it off cheap with the HG Foobarred! - but dont really wanna go down that route, as i love the thing! any thoughts MUCHO appreciated!! burt Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
CaptainK 11 Posted July 8, 2008 If you plan on keeping the car for a while, then yes go ahead with the rebuild. I've just spent a LOT of money on getting my GTi6 engine rebuilt for my 205. But I would say that if you are going down the route of a strip down and rebuild you may want to consider changing things while the engines apart - oil pump, coolant pump, big end bearings and so forth. DamirGTI 342 Posted July 9, 2008 Forget the garages/dealers , repair it by yourself replacing the head gasket isn't so hard and you don't need special tools for this job , just the usual set of spanners/sockets and torque wrench If in doubt about anything , you can always ask for help/advice/guidance here .
