I Have An Annoying Exhaust Rattle

Recommended Posts

chocolate_o_brian

as above really. right ive had the 205 for 2 weeks now and just working through the expected niggles for a 20 year old car.

its a 1988 f-plate 1.9gti (november on the v5) and ive recently noticed a rattle especially on idle so i gets the car on the drive and have a look. i had previously noticed a small crack in the exhaust manifold but this only accounts for slight blowing.

so i had a look/listen underneath and it seems apparent that the blowing/rattling is coming from the following weld point.

its the same joint which to me looks where the downpipe would connect to a centre section. as im used to imprezas (which have backbox/centre section/downpipe) this is how i viewed it.

for the record, this is what the downpipe looks like at the top (note slight crack covered with putty).

so really i want to know what are my options?

do i...

a. get the weld repaired soon as (mot due in 3 weeks)

b. need to buy a new system

c. any ideas on cost for a weld??

im really a novice on these cars and apologise if the questions asked seem ridiculous to the longer serving members. im naturally a perfectionist and im trying to iron out the problems and niggles within a limited budget.

also from looking at the above system, can someone explain to me what sort it is? as after a search i found there to be different types of system.

any help and/or advice is really appreciated

andy

thanks for that. to be honest i can handle the slight blowing from the manifold and was planning to use some putty/heat wrap to solve it for the time being. its the bloody annoying rattle from the centre area thats bugging me.

ive called a company quite local to me called "rebel powerpipes". theyre based in barton, about 15 miles away from sc*nthorpe. guy said to ring tomorrow morning and he may just be able to squeeze me in. hopefully its just a weld which needs grinding and re-applying. if not a new piece will need to be welded in place.

Check for a loose heatshield above the exhaust.

They are only thin alloy & it might've rotted away around the mounting holes by now.

tried that earlier mate. i then got a piece of wood and swicthed the engine on. sourced the rattle on the pipework and held the wood onto it upwards. its quietened down so i assume its a rotten weld.

i decided to call rebel powerpipes, based in barton nr humber bridge with regards to my problems. gaffer there (deepak) said he was uber busy, but could maybe get the car on the ramps and diagnose it for repair another day.

so i do the 20 or so miles on the m180/a15 rather tediously at about 55-60mph as i really cant be doing with an exhaust system on the motorway :D

so i gets there, deepak has the car on the ramps straight away and we both see the problem. the weld from the downpipe to the centre section is totally cracked all round. fair play to the guy when he said he would rather fix it there and then as he was as concerned as i was.

so a few solutions, but in the end i decided to have some custom stainless steel exhaust piping welded and chopped in. didnt have the resources to fund a whole system (however tempting), so basically deepak and his sidekick cut the old section out (which i believe was sleeve jointed) and then measured up a pretty straight piece of 2 1/4" bore stainless pipe.

about 90 mins later it was fitted and clamped in place. dont think it blows any more and looks neater. only now theres no silencer in it and its bloody ace :lol: not ott loud but a noticeable improvement and i get a few pops now too.

only issue now is a slight creeky rattle from around the backbox, which im putting down to the hangers maybe rubbing. il jack the car up tomorrow/friday and maybe make some slight adjustment with some pliers and elbow grease :)
