Guest frenchy205tt Posted July 7, 2008 hello guys just bought a 1.6 gti engine...cheap just wondering what it would take to turbo it. how and what....what turbo and management will i need to use and what about the compression ratio? is there any parts il need before id build it thanks josh
Gtiracer 0 Posted July 7, 2008 It is a bit different doing a 1.6 turbo but is it worth it for the hassle do you reckon? For best £ per BHP you really are better off going with Mi/Gti6 option and if thats not enough - then turbo that!
d-9 0 Posted July 7, 2008 Take a look at the PPC article on the 205 with a turbo where the backbox went. Should be possible to do it well cheap
ifcho 0 Posted July 7, 2008 A friend made a very cheap 1.6 turbo setup he just cut the downpipe, welded a flange for the turbo, few silicon hoses, a scrappy intercooler, some old msI that was laying around and hey, it was spinning wheels in third... Only lasted 3000 kms though, as it was running nearly 1.7bars, with the stock ignition timing and compression
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted July 8, 2008 As a back burner side project I'm building a 1600 T for fun. Have a look for the thread.
Guest frenchy205tt Posted July 8, 2008 Well i bought it for £35 so i thought id have a mess about and learn something because its not the end of the world if something goes wrong. im just abit confused on how to go about it. what turbo would you recommend i use and where could i get an ecu from? will it be a really hard job or possible with help from you lot who no more about it. thanks josh
guffe 2 Posted July 8, 2008 Mitsubishi TD04HL-16t from Volvo V70 T5 will do for 300 horses, -18t for little more. I'd recomend those, they are quite easy to find and they have internal wastegate and by-pass so they are compact to install. On your budget in mind Megasquirt II would probably be the only ECU to be considered. Is it a hard job? Well it depends on you, do you think DIY -exhaust manifold is a hard job? Or do you have good friends in the grease monkey department?
Guest frenchy205tt Posted July 8, 2008 i have a few people that mite be able to. isnt there any other exhaust manifold i can use apart from a custom one then?
sonofsam 5 Posted July 8, 2008 i have a few people that mite be able to. isnt there any other exhaust manifold i can use apart from a custom one then? Yes there are, 205parts copy TT manifold, or the manifold off a 406/XM/Xantia/605/ 2.0 Turbo- you will have to use the 2.0l Turbo T25 with that though, as the manifold has a non standard flange that only the French 2.0Turbo T25 fits. Guest frenchy205tt Posted July 8, 2008 thats ok then because i can get hold of a manifold and turbo off a 2.0. is there any other parts i will need? will i have to run different inlet and injectors?

PM or search for Henry Yorkes Turbo using 2.0L Turbo+ exhaust manifold+management albeit on a low compression 1.9 engine, 2.0T management/ECU has everything you need - knock, lambda sensor, electonic boost control running 0.65bar as standard. Would stick with the XU9 inlet manifold btw
