'beeping' Sidelights...

Recommended Posts

jimistdt

I was wondering if there is an alternative to me having a brain transplant. :) You see, I am always leaving my sidelights on, the light isnt very bright on the dash, and I am getting embarrased bumping off every time I do it. :) So what I would like to do is make up a little circuit that makes a beeping noise if my sidelights are on and I am about to leave the car ie. whenever I open my door. Bearing in mind I am colour blind, I have wired a 3-pin plug and that is as far as my electrical 'nouse' goes.

So a few bits of wire, a little speaker and erm....what next?

All you need is a little 12v beeper, one wire goes to a wire that is live with the lights on, the other to an earth switch on the door pillar. You used to be able to buy these from car spares shops but they don't do them any more as all modern cars have one built in. You could try somewhere like Maplin electronics, search for lights on buzzer or similar.

Would have thought the lights on warning "dinger" would have been fitted to a '94 model ?

Thanks Tom, but wouldnt that just make a noise whenever my lights were on?

No, as the switch is only earthed when the door is open.

Ok. Thanks :) , so where would you run a live feed from for the sidelight? The sidelight itself or somewhere else in the circuit, and which is the earth on the door switch. Sorry for being a bit slow, but I have zero confidence with anything with an elecrtic current running through it. :)

:) tell me about it. My 94´Golf III Variant drives me crazy with stuff It doesn´t have. It´s missing the light beeper - so I had to jump start it more than once.

It´s missing the Tank-reserve-warning-light which I always took for granted on my 205. And it´s missing the Glovebox for a nice airbag. And if you think if got the basic version - wrong - it´s an GT Special, with the 2L engine, Full-leather, Climatronic a.s.o.

I don´t get that VW policy. I recently installed such a aftermarket Light-warner - 5 min. job. But the missing Tank-reserve-warning-light really makes my head ache.

Does it have a fuel economy computer? My Vauxhall Omega doesn't have a warning light because it relies on the computer display. At least I am assuming this is the case, I've driven quite a long way with it saying 'Range 0 Miles' and I've never seen a warning light.

My audi has a computer with a "range" on but it also flashes up a yellow fuel pump sign and beeps when it gets low enough. It also uses the same pixellated display to signal other things. The other day it was low on fuel, low on screenwash and a brake light bulb had gone. It was beside itself as it didn't know what to display first!

No - it just has a computer which tells you the mpg not the range.

Ha! my little Arosa (VAG group) has a reserve light AND a lights on warning :P

Good job too as the "parking lights" stay on when the indicator stalk is engaged - like all VAG, i believe. Damn silly omission in your case IMO

All the Ph2 s I've had have had warning beepers

You'll already have a switch on the door matey, to turn your interior light on when you open your door. All you need to do is run a live from the positive wire that goes to the sidelight, to the positive on your beeper, then take the negative and plumb it into the little switch that pops out when you open the door. I haven't looked but I'd assume the it'll use the car body as the earth

I think you'll already have one with it being a '94 model, it's probably just kanckered

I had the same thing on my A8. The time to worry is when everything starts flashing up in red! :P

Or the wiring is there but the buzzer is missing.

I know Vehicle Wiring Products sell a suitable buzzer.

Thanks gti-si for that

I dont know if it is featured on the model or not. It is mention in the Handbook but it doesn't say STDT specifically, it says 'according to model'. :P

I take it it is standard on P2 GTi Steve, I didnt know that, It's probably tucked behind the dash somewhere but I dont think its really neccessary to go ripping the dash off to get to it :D

Ive found a buzzer for 99p, PL so i'll give it a go. :P

Cheers everyone.

The original warning buzzer is clipped to the bracket bolted to the lower steering column I think it is light blue in colour. Very simple set up....3 wires, one to lighting circuit, one to door earth and the other to the ignition, ie lights on, key out, door open and the alarm is chiming away.
