Engine Mounts, What To Go For? Standard? Group N?

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this has been asked before (I'm sure it has), I've tried to search but couldn't really get a simple answer!

My engine mounts are knackered, the car is a pig to drive in traffic as the drivetrain rocks and rolls all over the shop.

Now what's best to go for? Mainly for everyday road use, with the odd spirited run now and again, I'd love to go for the harder group N ones, but will the whole car rattle to pieces? Also, does the back mount need to be pressed in?

Any feedback would be great! Cheers

I'd go for a group-N bottom mount, as it seems to firm things up nicely, but then use standard mounts for the top mount and gearbox mount - otherwise you'll feel every engine vibration.

I got the Baker Bushes ones... Pretty solid, and yeah it does rattle a fair bit, especially at a few rev-bands but they ease off slightly once the car's warmed up. And now I've done a few thousand miles it's a lot better. Not the best for a daily driver, but sod it- 205's rattle anyway!

Yes - you need to press in the new mount and it's a driveshaft off job too.

I looked into this when I had my engine out for the SBC rebuild. Their advice was don't put grpN on any of the mounts for a road car - they have played with changing different mounts at different times and concluded that if any one of the mounts are grpN then you will get excessive vibration.

Yep, just the bottom Group N mount gives horrendous vibration and makes the engine feel rough as hell - but it depends what you're willing to put up with as acceptable vibration - I personally can't be doing with any of it!! but some poeple reckon it's not too bad but it is IMO for a road car.

would steer clear of the group n ones, toooo harsh. you can get a diesel one (possibly for a 306) which is a half way house.

i didn't notice a great deal of difference when i put a GrpN bottom mount on mine - but uprating the top engine mount does introduce alot of vibration and especially if you use the uprated buffers too (it's unbearable IMO if you use the uprated buffers)

they were the best of the small number of modifications i made to mine though and i'd like to try the equivalent on the Clio - but they're £1000 a set :)

if you're concerned about comfort, i'd try Ryan's suggestion of uprating just the bottom mount and renewing all of the others for std parts. you'll always be able to offer the uprated mount for sale on here if you don't get on with it
