Just Removed An Mi16 Engine But A Few Questions?

Recommended Posts

DanteICE

After work on saturday, me and my mate Rob, took out the Mi16 Engine out of 1 x 205 GTI to put in another.

Well before we put it back into the other car, I have a few questions....

1. When Rob removed the driveshafts the bearings pretty much fell apart, there was no real forcing or reason why any of Robs efforts should have created this, but all the 3 bearing sections on each driveshaft fell apart. He said they have never been changed (130k Miles) and it can be expected. I trust Rob 100% but I'd just like some re-assurance of this.

Oh and is it a real pain to replace them all?

2. After reading away on the forums and websites, I hear of tilting the engine, and how it should be avoided. But no-one says how its done, so I don't know if the engine I am putting in has already been tilted. From what I can gather it comes down to the lower engine mount, but what do you have to do or use to tilt the engine? Do I use an original 205 mount or 405 mount?

Thanks

I believe to tilt it people lengthen the lower orginal 205 mount... so it won't be the engine itself that is modified.

Ideally you want a re-angled manifold instead of doing it this way.

From the main website

"Exhaust manifold: You can tilt the engine slightly to clear the bulkhead by lengthening the bottom engine mount fork or modify the bulkhead (hammer it in - a lot), or modify the manifold itself by cutting and rewelding the joint end at a different angle. This is possible as it mild steel. The only drawbacks of tilting are the driveshafts run at more awkward angles and there is the possibilty that under track driving you MAY see oil pressure loss."

The three bearing sections will fall off the 'spider' on the inner driveshaft joints if they are pulled out of their housing - it's easy to do unfortunately.

If you are careful and can find all of the bearing rollers, you can put them back together again.

Where would I get a new set of bearings from?

would have thought a good motor factors, failign that try ebay or even pug them selves.

yesterday i put a mi16 into my 205 gti, and i used the standard lower mount and fork thats was fitted on the previous 205 engine, clearance is fine with no issues - hope that helps a bit.

The exhaust clearance won't be a problem, as the engine I bought came with a 4-2-1 full exhaust 2". But the inlet manifold is unchanged and he has leaned the radiator forward to give clearance.

I was thinking that I could lower the radiator, as in the not too distant future I intend to use throttle bodies and a CAIS direct from a guttman style grill, so lowering the radiator now you prove worth while for the future as it would clear the standard inlet manifold and allow for a CAIS for throttle bodies in the future, but can it be dropped low enough does anyone know? (haven't had time to measure it as yet.)

Oh and finally, 2 of the mounting bolts on the left side of the engine have bent when taking out the engine. Should I just heat them up and bent them back or can I replace them?

All the help is great by the way.

if you mean the bolts which hold the driver side mount, surely it would be best to replace them, to have no worries of future issues

As mine was well worn I tried to buy only the inner CV joint recently but I could not find anywhere that sells them separately at all....

As has already been said if you can find all the rollers (I think there are 33 in each bearing) you can clean everything up, regrease & re-build.

Failing that it's an exchange driveshaft from somewhere like GSF for example for £40 - £50.

I was advised to specify a GKN replacement shaft as these seem to be the most reliable and last the longest.
