Safe To Drive With Dodgy Rear Beam?

Recommended Posts

munster

Hi chaps. Just got myself a 205 mi16 which all seemed great, until i drove it home. Basically looks as if the rear beam is buggered... One wheel tilting in more than the other and some creaking when im at slow speeds..

So i will be getting it changed when i have the funds, but for the time being i have to live with it.

Whats the general concensus on driving with this problem? Is it safe? I know its a daft question as every case is different, but has anyone heard of it being unsafe to drive?

Im not much of a hard cornerer at the best of times, so i will be taking it even easier now.

I know i should have checked this more before buying, but the back of the car bounced freely and i didnt notice anything on the test drive.. I contacted the seller afterwards and he swears blind it is fine. But one wheel having more negative camber than the other and the creaking has made me convinced..

So basically, do u think its still safe to drive? Have many of you guys driven around with buggered beams for a while?

Thanks a lot.

Take it easy and you should be fine to wait until you have more money, hundreds of 205s on the road at the moment will have the same problem!

Iv recently had a new rear beam due to exessive play in one of the arms, mot man classed it as dangerous. Couple this with play in the wishbone ball joints, and it made an 'interesting' yet suicidal drive! I just took it easy till i sourced a new beam, sure if u do the same you'll be fine

Does the fact the rear still bouces ok indicate anything?

Or is the fact its creaking and one wheel tilting in mean its fooked, full stop?

Im in Essex btw, if anyone can reccomend a good place to get refurbished beams..

thanks

Dan Taylor (taylorspug) does a good job with rear beams. He's in west sussex, not a million miles away from you, about an hour and a half drive...

I'll second that recommendation - he did a really good job on my beam, on time and budget.
