centre as in middle front of the block? oil filler pipe is the most likely culprit.

As said, oil filler pipes are common places to start if the oil is on the front middle of the block.

Also check the oil pressure sensors - these are located under the manifold, slightly to the left on the block. They can let out a lot of oil if they are faulty or loose.

Also check that the oil filter is on properly and not damaged, and also the adaptor piece between the oil filter and the block - this is part of the oil cooler (there will be two pipes coming off it) and can leak.

Additionally, I guess the cam cover seal could be leaking too, though the oil should come out of the back of the engine due to the angle it sits at.

Let us know how you get on.

Oh I forgot one other, make sure that the sump itself is not leaking - its very common for them to leak where they go onto the block.

I had a leak on my 1.6, cleaned all the breather hoses (they were pretty mayo'd up) and it stopped.

Couldn't find where the leak was coming from but this def solved it.

I have a leak just off centre at the front too, its one of the oil cooler pipes (mine has the remote mounted cooler), maybe worth checking on yours.

Don't suppose anyone knows where I can get suitable pipes, what are the specs, thread sizes? - I'll start a thread! lol

was having a look around the 205 tonight and pretty sure its gearbox oil its leaking, oil hasnt dropped at all according to dipstick, but very oily around gearbox area.is there a dipstick for the gearbox oil to measure that? Ive shifted the car once and two patches so far.its dropped about 1/4 litre of oil on the floor over three months period really so not major major leak but needs to be sorted.will show pics tomoz. Sump is very oily but more dirty sticky oil than clean oil running around the gearbox

If it is gearbox oil thats leaking, it should smell sweet - quite different to normal engine oil.

There isn't a dipstick. Theres a big bolt on the side of the gearbox, and the hole its in indicates the max. level.
