stuart.m 0 Posted July 2, 2008 Hi, Basically, I had the engine out of my 405 (ph2 Mi16), and thought id rip the loom out and clean up the engine bay and everything at the same time. Of course, I didn't label anything as i took it all out, which i obviously regret now. I think im very close - the ignition comes on and the dash all lights up etc as it should. I seem to have lost the wire for the starter solenoid, so I can make the engine crank over by putting 12v straight to the solenoid, but could anyone tell me where abouts in the loom the signal for the solenoid comes from? So, it will crank over, but won't fire, no fuel or spark. The pump is running as theres pressure in the pipes just the injectors are not opening and there is no spark. I only have 2 plugs on the engine loom that I cant find a place for, if anyone could tell me what they are for it would be great. First is a 3-pin white plug: http://stuart-m.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/405/02072008137.jpg second is a 2-pin brown plug: http://stuart-m.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/405/02072008138.jpg Any help in getting this sorted is appreciated. Ive got a nagging feeling that the white plug was not connected to anything at all, as it was totally covered in oil and dirt inside and out, but the brown plug is clean. Cheers, Stuart
Ethos 0 Posted July 2, 2008 That 2nd plug looks like it might come from the sensor on the top right of the radiator? 3 pin white plug go into the junction box on the slam panel at all?
stuart.m 0 Posted July 2, 2008 Nope it doesnt fit into that junction box, too big, wrong type of plug. All the sensors on the radiator are accounted for so sadly not. Thanks anyway
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted July 3, 2008 How much of the loom did you take apart? By phase 2 Mi16 is it the 1998cc XU10J4 engine (iron block ) & not the alloy 1905cc Mi16 engine? The plugs will only fit onto one component so if you manage to find any sensors that have no plug on them you might be there. The white plug could be the TPS on the throttle body & the brown one could be the bitron sensor for the aircon if the 405 has it fitted. Can you see any wire numbers on any of the wires? Graham. stuart.m 0 Posted July 5, 2008 Hi, Thanks for the suggestions Graham. Yeah its the 1998cc iron block engine. Thing is, i have plugs for all the sensors, so maybe these actually were just lying spare. The white plug doesnt fit the TPS (already got the correct plug for that) and the 405 doesnt have aircon Good idea with the wire numbers will have a check. Thing is, I havent really done anything at all to the loom, took it out of the engine bay, then as I was putting it back in just taped up any bits with exposed wires etc, ive certainly not cut anything off, which is why i'm confused. Does the connection to the starter solenoid come out of the engine/sensors loom, or straight from somewhere else?
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted July 5, 2008 On the 405's I've removed looms from the starter does have a seperate plug in the loom for the solenoid but the brown plug I've seen for this looked different from that plug. That plugs looks to be either sensor or switch specific imo. Graham.
stuart.m 0 Posted July 6, 2008 Thanks for your replies. Im off work today and tomorrow so should hopefully get a chance to get along to the car and put some time in, will let you know how i get on
stuart.m 0 Posted July 7, 2008 It lives! True to form, if I'd just taken a bit more time about everything and labeled/been careful it would have been fine. Solenoid connection does indeed come through a brown plug, I'd connected it upto a different brown plug by mistake and, the ring terminal had at some point fallen off the end of the wire onto the solenoid, so I didnt know which one it was. Anyway, connected it up properly and it started on the key, so im happy! I'm sure theres a lesson in this somewhere... So, the plug from the main loom that carries the solenoid signal has 2 pins, the solenoid 12v and an earth, I assume this earth is important as it disappears into the engine loom, seems it was all that is required. So I'm no further forward with what the plugs above do, the white plug I am now confident was not connected to anything, had another look at it and it is coated in dirt inside and out. The brown plug shown above remains a mystery, but... it runs, so good progress! Cheers for the replies Graham being pointed in the right direction is always appreciated.
