Cheap Coilovers? Waste Of Money?

Recommended Posts

johnnyboy666

a came accross these on fleabay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COIL-OVER-COILOVER-P...id=p3286.c0.m14

and was wondering if anybody had any experience with similar budget coilovers? they do seem to be a good £200 or so less than anything else, surely there must be a reason for this?

any comments appreciated as usual

john

* Kit includes: 2 front full coilovers, 2 rear coilovers

so what are you meant to do with the rear ones??

you get what you pay for springs to mind

The aren't bad quality wise, but are designed for slamming your car as low as it will go and as such are pretty much rock solid.

I had a pair on the rear of my Polo and they were perfect for running 8x13 ET0 banded steels without any rubbing.

What worries me, is i keep reading about faked parts etc being listed on e bay, usually constructed to a much poorer quality and breaking!! I wouldnt put my life in the hands of a manufacturer with no reputation, there are a lot of very reputable suspension companies that will charge more but i think you are pretty much gaurantee they are not going to fail on you at 60 into a bend

to be honest i would probably only use the fronts (i suspect its says rear coilovers because its just a generic sales pitch they use for all the sales) seems like they could be the way forward then, as i really need to sort out my front suspension set up as im running nasty second hand spax, the left one of which is disturbingly soft even on the hardest setting, wich means munching of tyres by the arch on fast roundabouts etc.

so for these would i be able to just use my current top mounts and bolt straight on?

If your springs are good and you just need front shocks, KYB AGX adjustables are only 70-odd quid plus vat.

They are a dependable brand (Std fit on imprezas and other jab mobiles) and run very well on my 205. Brilliant in fact.

the springs i have at the mo are a little low and a little soft for my taste, is that £70 each or the pair?

Each. I use them with autofives -35mm springs (which are about £45). They have 4 points of adjustment front (top adjustable) and 6 at the rear. Really well controlled in corners but deal with bad surfaces with no fuss or crash.

they are raceland coilovers sold on by a company called hottuning. I bought in a set for a customer and the weight was appallingly heavy. Didnt get good feedback for the ride quality either.
