Setting The Valve Tolerences On A 1.9 8 Valve

Recommended Posts

m_pugz_1986

can some one go trough the whole procedure how to set the valve clearances ? even where do i start which valves do i get rocking and which do i check then to where and so on etc etc . and i have been told to set the exhaust clearance to 0.30 -0.35 and the inlet to 0.20- 0.25 as is not so noisy and better for optimum performance .

thanks matt

Have you got any Haynes 205 manual? Its all listed in there & its the right method.

Its are available for download (free) if you have a search (M@tts signature iirc).

Remove whatever is in the way to get to the rocker cover, remove that & measure the clearances at present with the engine stone cold.

The valves are laid out Ex-In-In-Ex-Ex-In-In-Ex from either side of the engine but #1 is at the flywheel & dizzy end. You can start anywhere just as long as you list them in the right order. Turn the crankshaft in the right direction using the crank pulley bolt in the offside wheel arch to do them all.

Clearance range according to Haynes are;

  • Inlet: 0.150.25mm.
  • Exhaust: 0.35 - 0.45mm.

But Puma Racing recommend the same as you mentioned so it should be OK.

Check the clearance when the cam lobe is 180 oppopsite the valve follower. You need to remove the camshaft to change them & the shims aren't usually available individually from Peugeot (two minimum).

This attachment is handy for working out the size you need to order along with the part numbers.

Graham.

You can measure them one by one , or two in the same time  , like this :

- set fully open : exhaust valve 1 -> check inlet valve 3 and exhaust valve 4

- set fully open : exhaust valve 3 -> check inlet valve 4 and exhaust valve 2

- set fully open : exhaust valve 4 -> check inlet valve 2 and exhaust valve 1

- set fully open : exhaust valve 2 -> check inlet valve 1 and exhaust valve 3

Rgs !
