Ignition Amp Source?

Recommended Posts

Tom Fenton

My red 1600 over the last few weeks has developed an odd misfire. It only does it now and again, but with no consistancy regarding load, revs etc. It is like a momentary hold-back, then a cough and off it goes again.

My gut feeling is the ignition amp starting to break down, I've checked the plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor and all these are in good condition.

So where is the best place to buy one? I've found a place selling them for £12+VAT, but is that too good to be true and asking for bother?

Are 1900 ones the same? Bosch number 0 227 100 123

If so then I've got 3 used ones here that you're welcome to try first.

I 'borrowed' them from Matt ages ago when I had a similar fault (occasional misfire/hesitation at high revs), but I tried the old trick of renewing the thermal paste first, and the problem disappeared.

Don't buy cheap ones - use the Bosch originals.

Sounds like Paintguy can sort you out.

a Bosch/lucas stockist, or Peugeot.

I'm sure you could get one from GSF if say a golf etc used them, unfortunately all GSF and ECP seem to want to supply for any peugeot is an Intermotor item.

I live at Gleadless, but I work near the airport ( @ The Car People) which might be a little more convenient for you.

I'll PM you my number later, or you could catch me at Matt's later tonight :(

Cheers, I'm on a round trip to Northampton tonight to pick up a trailer, but could call through to your work tomorrow afternoon, what time do you finish? If you PM me your number that would be great.

Well an update, managed to meet up with Andy who kindly waited for me whilst I battled the Sheffield rush hour traffic, top man.

I removed the old ign amp, a ducellier item that looks like the original, and then after cleaning up the ally heatsink (not that it was too bad) fitted one of the Bosch amplifiers.

Quick test up the road and it has sorted the problem. Only thing I need to do really is to get some of the thermal paste, at the moment I have fitted it clean and dry with a good contact to the ally heatsink, but some of the proper stuff would probably be better. Anyone know where the paste can be obtained?

if the thermal paste is the same as they use for processors on a computer which i suspect it is then any place that builds them should have it.

i need to do this on my s16 to try and cure a small and very random miss fire

Yes the computer processor heat sink paste will do just fine , and you can source it from any computer shop  (it's usually silver or white color paste available in small or larger packages ..) .. just ask for - silicone heat transfer compound .

Or , if you wish , you can ask at AA garages as they stock smaller doses of proper heat soak jelly for ignition amps (transparent jelly in little pvc bags of say 2grams )..

Rgs !

I contacted a local Bosch dealer and gave them the part number for the Mi ignition amp and was told that part isn't available any more. Which is bullsh*t obviously.
