benlilly 0 Posted June 30, 2008 Hi, What are the differences between the early and later rear beams? Stripped mine yesterday for refurb and possible upgrades and then remembered that bigger bars are not available for the earlier cars. Did notice that mine has handed torsion bars. Splined ends are different sizes. Thanks.

jackherer 543 Posted July 1, 2008 afaia they're all the same tbh. There is definitely something different about the early bars but I'm not sure what.
welshpug 1,657 Posted July 1, 2008 although I'm unsure of the exact difference and the dates, VERY early torsion bars had smaller diameter ends and splines.
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted July 1, 2008 isnt it something to do with some haveng 30/32 splines and some having 28/30? or something along those lines?
benlilly 0 Posted July 1, 2008 Brilliant, thanks. From memory I think one end was a bit over 19mm and the other 23 ish.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted July 1, 2008 isnt it something to do with some haveng 30/32 splines and some having 28/30? or something along those lines? This is also what I understand to be the case & even though service box can't confirm this, the old Part CD does; http://www.stuartmcguire.co.uk/pug/GB/205F/5/51A02A.HTM Graham. benlilly 0 Posted July 10, 2008 Wow, that's cleared things up There are lots of variants! Or have I just miss-read the table....
B1ack_Mi16 67 Posted July 10, 2008 One different thing is stub axles, on a 1985 ph1 I had some years ago the stub axles were different from the newer one. Not seen a stub axle like that since then, so guess it's not very common though.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 10, 2008 If the beam is a 1.9 or post 1987 you will be fine, Before this is a grey area but from memory only the very first 1984/1985 car's the different amount of splines on them
