Is This The Right Damper For My Car?

Recommended Posts

jimistdt

I am looking to replace both my rear dampers as the one on the left is giving me slightly unpredictable results when driving, especially on long right hand bends. ;)

I have found the right section on Service Box, but then there are several sub-sections and this is where I am getting stuck.

The one I 'think' it is is - '520696, XADT - and (p)', http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com/docpr...20%205%2052C01A but I would very much like someone to confirm this for me before I go and buy it.

Also, if I purchased the damper would I also need to purchase any other parts such as locking nuts, bushes etc. or is it a complete set?

BTW, it is a '94 STDT, which I am looking to keep as standard as I can.

Thanks Jimi.

I'd be very suprised if the cause of your odd handling is down to your dampers. It is MUCH more likely to be worn rear beam pivot shafts and/or bearings.

I have a pair of standard GTI dampers you can try on the car if you wish to see if it makes any difference, I've a strong feeling that dampers will not cure your problem though I am afraid.

I'd agree with Tom, unless the dampers are obviously leaking its quite unlikely to be them, I'd want to check the condition of the beam if its Unknown.

If you are going for a set of O.E dampers I'd recommend some from a 306, 5206 K6 is the Code IIRC, fitted to the GTi6 and some 5 door hatches.

Ok, I will do my best to describe whats happens, if I am driving on a road at 40 mph and the roads breaks slightly to the right and I do over a manhole or deviation in the road with the rear n/s wheel, it sort of bangs and the rear of the car skips to the left a few inches as if it is bouncing, similar to oversteer, but not warranted if you know what I mean? It recovers after half a second or so but it is quite annoying.

As said above it sounds like the beam to me.

I was under the impression that the STDT doesnt have a beam but used a setup similar to the XS. Or should I just shut up now? :D

it is a beam, and is a similar setup to the XS, its the diameter of the torsion bars and ARB that are similar IIRC.

every 205 has a beam :D

I would LOL.

Get it up in the air and on stands, then check for play in the trailing arm.

As I said before you can borrow the GTI dampers I have if you want to see if this is the cause. But I severly doubt it.

Ok, chaps thanks for your input, and your patience, I will get it up and check for play. How noticeable would 'play' be? Its just that it had its MOT last month and the problem existed then but it wasnt picked up, obviously I didnt point it out to them as they had already had too much of my hard earned as it was. :D

Usually the MOT place lifts the car up under the rear dampers. If there was any play in the rear arms, you wouldn't feel it with the weight of the car being lifted by the dampers.

A right-o, got ya.... :D

So depending on the direction of play in the wheel, ie. up/down, left/right or sideways, I can deduce the defective part then?
