What's This Bit On The Gearbox?

Recommended Posts

Just got my gearbox back from the sandblasters, unfortunately he didn't blank of the holes very well.

I stripped down and cleaned out the bearings in the final drive unit but i'm worried that some sand got in this hole below

Gearbox

What does this hole lead to and what is normally put on it, it's been that long out of the car that long i can't remember!

I filled it with a funnel in the side of the gearbox the other times i've changed it, Through the big bolt on the furthest left side. Fill to spill?

Pretty sure its a breather pipe.

yep, that's the breather, so I'd want to strip that down to clean it up before using it if it wasn't blocked off when being blasted.

the black section is damaged and should have a small plug clipped into it.

Thanks welshpug, and for supplying the part numbers ;)

Can they only be ordered through a Pug dealership?

I undid all the 15 bolts or so from the area of the gearbox that seems to hole the two main pieces together for acces however the box wouldn't separate.

Is this the correct way to gain access to that area and any clues why the box wouldn't separate?

Thanks for helping me out with this.

Best way to strip the box is get the older haynes joke book, or I'm sure it's been gone over loads of times before, But if grit has got into it I would strip it completly to the extent of removing the gears, I know when I get the cases Powder coated and sealed the best I can you always get some grit in there

Ok, gearbox strip and clean it is. Another time consuming first time project for me ;) ha

Any tips on what to clean it with? or just good old WD40?
