Mi16 Water Pump, Can It Be Changed Without Lowering The Engine?

Recommended Posts

As above. Mi lump in a 205. Can the pump, belt and tensioner be changed without lowering the engine or is there not enough room? I've tried searching but most pump questions tend to be from people rebuilding engines out of the car.

I've got an odd croaking type noise, seems to be engine speed dependent but its hard to hear when revving as its not that bad at the moment but I've got a horrible feeling its my pump as the sound is coming from around the pump, lower belt area.

from memory, you might be ok for the pump, but not the tensioner. However, as you need access to the tensioners to get the belt off, In the long run it's much easier to remove the rear mount horizontal bolt, then right hand side upper engine mount, and long drive shaft. this will allow the engine to drop considerably and the access is vastly improved.

Super Josh

I had a similar noise on my Mi a few months ago and did the same as you, changing the water pump, cambelt and tensioners.

Wasn't too difficult, even with my big hands. Although don't do as I did and trap the water pump gasket and then watch the coolant come flooding out as you try to refill the system. It's amazing how quickly you can strip it all down the second time around :(

Tensioners were a bit of a PITA, some say you can use a sump plug spanner to tension them, but I didn't have enough room for that. So I ground two flats on an 8mm Allen key (I think that was the size) to make it square and that fitted in without any clearance problems :D

Still didn't sort out my problem though :o:lol:

Did you even figure it out?? Its not constant and quite quiet but I'm picky and panic at the first sound of noise by the cam belt.

Thanks all.

No Joe, I didn't  Mine was a whine that came in at around 4K, when the engine was warm. A few people suggested cambelt tension was the culprit, But it was fine for 20K and then started making that strange noise. I have heard a few others speak about it too.

mine whined after i changed the belt and test ran it, it was a tad over tensioned, so i retensioned and went again, nice and quiet second time round.

Funny this should come up today, as to my annoyance ive just discovered the same problem with my sump plug tool i was previously using.

Its fine when using the original rubbish allen key tensioner bolts, but the slightly bigger 13mm replacement bolts mean they both cannot fit at once! :(

IMO timing belt is a total pain the arse on an Mi'd 205, however you can get away with it with the engine in the standard position with a little patience.

What, you mean the one in most timing kits that wont fit between the chassis leg and the engine on a 205?

Finally got round to fitting my new water pump and belt today!! Used a sump plug and big spanner to do the tensioners. Just enough room to squeeze the plug in.

Dead pleased with my self as its my first change :)

and the timing was still right after a few revolutions!!! :o
