Engine Been Sitting With Head Off For Year

Recommended Posts

c_r_thomson

The engine has been out of the car and sitting on the floor of my garage for about a year now. The head is off and sitting beside it due to a head gasket failure.

Could i pop a new gasket on and fit the engine back in the car or is there anything you can recommend first? Engine has done 80k

Cheers, Tommo

If the head has been sitting on a flat surface and not on its side then probably but I would recommend a light skim just to make sure. I made this mistake on a engine I built some years ago and the HG failed withing 20k because the head was warped by the smallest amount even though it seemed to check out fine when I checked it with a metal rule. Also check the flatness of the block as this could be warped slightly too.

The head was skimmed when it was off and has been sitting flat on a tyre. I was more worried about the engine internals. The block needs a good clean up.

Clamp the liners and turn the block over by hand then. Are there any visible signs of rust? If you are not sure then I really wouldn't take the risk for the sake of a days work to strip the block and check it all - it's kind of a "how long is a piece of string" question. The main problem would be sticking piston rings or excessive corrosion inside the block caused by lack or oil/waterMaybe uploading some pictures would help?
