Can Someone Tell Me What This Is?

Right. I'm sure this is a very simple question and will make me look like a complete div for not knowing but I need someones help to identify a part of my alloy MI16 engine.

The part in question is located just below the distributor and has what appears to be a vacuum pipe coming from the inlet manifold and an electrical connection on the back and possibly a larger pipe on the front (it's hard to tell if it goes to the same place). I have attached a couple of photo's but to be fair they're not great because access is terrible. The issue is that when the engine is running the pipe that comes from the inlet manifold is flat, it seems like the vacuum is causing it to 'suck in'. I'm assuming this isn't right and probably isn't that good to be honest so any possible causes would be really helpful.

I'm not entirely sure that it's in the correct position because the bracket looks non-original.

Here we go.

First picture is from the back looking forward. The distributor is just above this shot just out of shot.

This is from the top looking down from the passenger side.

Thanks a lot in advance for any advice.

seconded! MI on 8v injection? Does it have cold start problems? Would seem that the depression in the intake is collapsing an old pipe, so won't allow supplementary air through

Thanks guys.

Doesn't have any cold start problems, it's pretty good and fires virtually first time, it is running 8v distributor and ECU cause the guy who had it before had intended to run it on carbs but never got round to fitting them. Are there any problems with running the 8v set up? I think I have all the bits here to convert it to the 405 set up but don't really have the technical knowledge to start removing bits like that. Any idea of the best way to rectify the problem with the pipe?

Running the Mi16 on 8v management compared to the proper Mi management is like running uphill with lead boots on.

I'm not a million miles away from you Dave, tbh the conversion if you have the loom & everything isn't hard but well worth doing.

IMO you shouldn't need the SAD connected but it definately shouldn't have a vacuum going through it, in fact is it even connected at both ends? If it is where on the inlet manifold is it connected>? The Mi inlet doesn't have a place to fit it unless its using the ICV point.

Graham.

As far as I can make out it's connected at both ends. The pipe which runs from the inlet manifold is certainly connected at both ends. It runs from a connection on the top right hand side of the inlet manifold if you're looking at it from the front of the car. As in this picture.

It does seem to have power to it and is obviously doing something because the vacuum isn't there when it's not running.

How long do you reckon it would take to convert to the 16v ECU and other bits? I know I have the loom and the ECU and a load of other bits and bobs but I'm not sure about a distributor, I haven't had a good chance to look through everything but I haven't seen one.

Mi16s don't have a distributor as such, just a cap and arm on the end of the camshaft. If you have all the bits someone who has done one before can get it running in under an hour and neat and tidy in under two. Its very worthwhile, if you have the bits you'd be crazy not to.

Thanks for the advice people. I've had a bit of a read through the guide to S.A.D.s and MI16 conversions on the front page of this site so I have a bit of a better idea now. I'll have a look at the management system tonight to make sure I've got all the bits and might attempt it when my dad gets back off holiday. I've got both the Haynes manuals for the 205 and the 405 so I'm sure we (read as 'my dad') can work it out sometime, their wiring diagrams tend to be pretty concise and give a decent idea of what goes to where.
