S16 Pre Conversion Parts List

About to embark on my fist conversion, a 180bhp S16 engine from a 306 into my phase 1.5 1.6 205.

 

Trying to collate a list of parts I'll need if anyone can help me out. I've read a lot about converting to the alloy block such as group n lower mount etc but will I need the same parts for the S16?

 

This is what I've got. Will I need a different exhaust, which coolant hoses, header tank etc?....

  • S16 engine from phase 1 306
  • GTi-6 injectors and throttle body
  • exhaust manifold straight off the 306
  • Sachs clutch & flywheel
  • 306 loom & ecu
  • Coil packs & starter motor from 306
  • All engine mounts from 306
  • 306 alternator without belt

you will need to match the S16 ecu with S16 injectors (and engine) gti6 ones will make it overfuel.

 

you'll need to modify your downpipe, and either lower your engine (with a shorter r/h engine mount) or extend the lower mounting fork.

 

clutch used will depend on your choice of gearbox, most commonly used one is the 1.9 Mi16 clutch with a 1.6 gti or 1.9 Mi16 gearbox.

 

if you use the original S16 gearbox you need an original S16 clutch <_<

When removing the engine from the S16, Cut the down pipe off, with a reasonable amount of pipe trailing.

 

You don't need to tilt the engine, as the S16 exhaust manifold fits into the 205, but the problem with the exhaust is that some 205 down pipes (different makes) mean you can't just bolt them on due to the diameter of the flange, but not forgetting a lamba sensor nut needs to be welded into the pipe.

 

If your using the orginal S16 ACAV inlet, you will need to trim the slam panel down.

The S16 engine has fast road cam, lightened bottom end, ported and polished Spec-r GTi-6 manifold and throttle body with GTi-6 injectors. It was run in a 306 before it was removed and has the dizzyless loom includded. Will overfuelling still be a problem?

 

 

The engine has a Sachs S16 clutch and I plan to use it with the 1.6 be1 gearbox?

Assuming the S16 ecu has been remapped for the car to run these modifications it will be fine. I think Welshpug thought you meant you were running Gti 6 injectors on an otherwise standard engine which would cause the overfuelling.

I myself am going to be starting on a Gti 6 conversion soon. The S16 is an easier fit as the exhaust manifold doesnt foul the bulkhead as on the gti 6 motor.

With the Gti 6 inlet you shouldnt have a problem with clearance to the slam panel either so you have the best of both worlds. I think you may still have to drop the rad slightly however.

The gearbox/clutch combination will be fine and work with no modification.

Yeah sorry my mistake. I hope it has been remapped as It's a lot of money to spend on the engine if it hasn't! Been done by a company called Spec-R so I might contact them.

 

Good news on the manifolds. So I'll just have to modify the exhaust downpipe, lower the rad & fit a harder lower engine mount?

I think the Spec R is just a ebay thing selling manifolds which claim allot, When you look at the BTCC GTi6 inlet's it's like chalk and cheese

The exhaust is 50/50, some fit other's just need the S16 flange welding on, You can use all OE engine mount's as there's no clearance issues at all

The cam's I would check the number to confirm that they are what they claim, this would be on the end either behind the pullies or on the Vacume pump end.

Can't find anything on Ebay. There's a company called Spec- R who tune Pugs in Bath. Going to contact them to check & hopefully it's their work. I've got a dyno print showing 180bhp at the flywheel so I don't think the cams etc is bs.

 

So the engine could go straight in, no problem. What exhaust would you suggest using?

Use the std exhaust as it should line up without any problems (or as I said with a different flange), Never heard of any Pug tuner's called Spec R thou only seen the manifolds (Painted Black?) on ebay.

Engine fit's like a glove, the only thing you may need to adjust is the cam belt cover depending on Master Cyl clearance

Done some research & it appears that the Spec-R manifold has come from a company called Headtune.co.uk who provide manifolds for Scottish Mini rally cars, they don't look like they're shy of Ebay though. The dyno and mapping etc has been done by Awsome GTi in Manchester who look quite reputable. Sounds easy enough, just the wiring which may prove a pig
