Ingition Timing

Recommended Posts

i had a play around with my ignition timing as there was a rattlely noise coming from my engine under load. low speed in fifth gear etc. so i thought it might be my ingition timing (pinking). also it was idling quite high 1500rpm and i checked for any air leaks couldnt find any afm is good. so i retared my ignition timing until it was idling at about 900rpm and then took the car for a spin its a 1.9 gti by the way. everything seemed fine the noise had seemed to have gone but on the way back the car developed a hesitation and loss of power at about 2500rpm. have i just retarded the ignition timing too much or could it be another problem. when i was adjusting the ignition timing the car was about halfway up the temperature gauge. was wondering if i should have let it get warmer before adjusting it.

first time i've had a play around with ingition timing so any help appreciated

The idle will increase as you advance up to a point and then it will slow down

The fastest idle you get by turning the dizzy is the most efficient at idle but may be too advanced higher up the range (pinking)

keep turning it back a little at a time until pinking under load stops.

yes do it at normal running temp, the more advance the better until it pinks then go back a bit.

also clean out dizzy with carb cleaner or something and check that the springs etc are OK. ;)

Also MOST important is to check that the vac advance is fitted and working, this will retard the timing under load.Remove vac pipe for twiddling, get highest idle speed and then reconnect it and road test. If no pinking and running ok then set idle with mixture/air screw.

Sorry to intrude on your topic swinney88, I have allmost the same problem.

It idles at 14-1500 rpm and if I try to turn the idle-ing screw down it dies allmost instantly.

Also in revs pretty rough until 2500-3000 rpm, after that it runs very smooth.

At idleing speed if I press the accelerator pedal a little and the leg go, it revs a little, then goes to allmost 1000 rpm then 1500 again.

I messed a little with the ignition timing as well...so I hope there`s the problem.

Also it backfires from time to time, mostly when I rev it, but that didn`t happened many times.

It ran just fine for 2000 miles(since I changed the engine) and then something happened, I`m trying to sort out what.

1.9gti also.

Today I had some time and thought I`d see what`s with the car.

I found the ignition advance hose cracked near the dizzy, so I fixed it, but with no success.

I retarted the timing 1 cm, back to it`s original position.

The idle is erratic and splutterd...no constant idle.

I think the AFM is at fault here but don`t have another one to test with so I hope it`s not his fault.

Any ideas? Anything is welcome.

New stuff:

Today I`ve bought myself a digital multimeter...very good thinking.

I started measuring the voltage at the AFM, the flap and the air temperature sensor.

The air temp voltage was way off...only 5-6 volts, when it should have been 9.1V, turned it to ~8.1 it seems it won`t go beyond that, but the idle speed is perfect, no more spluttering :D, altough according to autodata it should have been 9.1, but i`m happy for now.

The flap was also 1 volt minus to what it should have been according to Autodata - 4.8-5.2V max, when it shoulb be 5.8-6V according to Autodata.

Very happy...also the car pulls perfect at constant speed.
