Guest tim_1.9 Posted June 20, 2008 Yesterday I had the exhuast manifold off and replaced it. Whilst I had it off I noticed that the exhaust ports of the centre 2 cylinders were quite oily. Am I right in thinking that this means the valve stem seals nead replacing? Are there any other likely causes? Last time I compression tested it those cylinders were fine, but one of the others was a bit low - presumably the valve not seating correctly. Looks as though the head might have to come off soon
simonb 0 Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) Does it smoke at all? could be stem seals or duff oil scraper rings on the cylinders in question. Edited June 20, 2008 by simonb
Guest tim_1.9 Posted June 23, 2008 Doesn't seem to smoke - although it makes considerably more visible fumes than modern engines! The car is on it's orginal engine and has only done 86k
simonb 0 Posted June 23, 2008 could just be running a bit rich then. Are you loosing any oil? Stem seals can fail in as little as 50k. If not I would get the idle mixture checked and make sure the fueling is OK. If it's running alright then don't worry about it too much just keep an eye on things.
