Fixing Knackered Ignition Barrel

Recommended Posts

KRISKARRERA

Either my key is worn and/or the internal bits of the ignition barrel are worn because when I put the key in I cannot turn it to start without first wiggling it. It's become progressively worse over time.

I guess it's the barrel's gubbins as the key works ok in the door locks.

I know this is highly dodgy and not very secure, but is it possible to take the ignition barrel apart and take bits out / modify bits so that anything that's thin enough to be inserted into the keyhole will allow it to turn?

Had this happen a few times, it just seems they get worn as you say, i've taken the barrel out and cleaned it up/greased it and it's seemed alot better since. Not done that too often though, the one in my grey one keeps doing it, PITA!!

Have you got a spare key thats not as worn?

I don't think you can get far enough into the actual lock barrel to change anything or basically pick the lock as you're suggesting.

I've taken apart & rebuilt the electric switch part of an ignition barrel before but not the body.

New lockset time but find a better one to try first if you can.

Graham.

Yeah spare key that I can try, I'll try it tomorrow, though I don't like it as it's not a genuine pug one lol

yes, if they're anything like the door locks you can take the little things (i forget the technical name) and re-arrange them to take different keys, fiddly a time-taking though!

Yeah but according to another thread you can just whip out all those things and any Pug key of this era will start it. I wonder if the ignition barrel is dismantlable like the door locks.
