Gearstick Wobble

Recommended Posts

Rich_p

The gearstick on my 309 gti has a slight wobble to it when accelerating away, once you are up to speed it is not noticable.

I have started to feel a slight rumble from the front to, could both symptoms point at a warn/bent driveshaft rather thsn the box itself having an issue?

I ask as I had a bent recon shaft fitted to a pug years back and that made the gearstick sway side to side about a foot each way!

ive got a similar problem in the xs, going to try some new engine mounts, if that doesnt work i'm assuming it could be driveshafts

When I've had these symptoms before, a worn INNER CV joint has been the cause.

And a worn inner means a replacement shaft doesn't it?

I think the engine mounts are past it anyway and are being replaced but I'm changing the gearbox soon and if it is the shaft I may as well change it at the same time.

Can it be checked with the shaft on the car still?

Sounds like an inner CV joint to me too. It should be obvious which side needs changing. Grab a hold of the shaft near the inner joint (still on the car) and check for movement and compare it with the other one.

It is possible to change the inboard CV joint, but it's eiseier to replace the whole shaft, and not much more expensive for an exchange one from GSF (if they still do them)

Exact same with my Mi a few months back.

ie just changed the other engine mount on mine and although there is a vast improvement, the symptoms still persist, so i had a yank on both driveshafts and the drivers side one has about 1-2mm play from side to side, does tht sound like it knackered??

Another vote for CV, had a new (recon) shaft that was a bit stiff to bend on the inner joint, went on the car and the gear knob wobbled like an old grannys wobbly bits on a bouncy castle..
