Standard 1.9 Exhaust Manifold....

Recommended Posts

Guest tim_1.9

I have just taken off my exhaust manifold to replace what I thought was a blowing gasket and found that the manifold itself has small dimples on the outside of the outer ports. They are about 5mm in diameter and 1mm deep and are why it was blowing originally. The manifold is one of the newer reiniforced ones and is otherwise ok. Should I

1. Get the surface of the mainfold skimmed to flaten it out.

2. Fill the dimples with some of that 'hard as metal' putty, and remount using new gaskets as planned.

3. Same as 2. but remount using some Loctite Ultra Copper Gasket Seal 5920

4. Just whack it back on with the loctite and hope for the best!

5. Gaskets and loctite

:D

I have just had to start commuting in the car and the reason I am sorting this out is to make it a bit more civilised (and putting on a quieter exhaust at the same time).

On a similar thought, is is worth going to pug specially to buy the gasket between the manifold and the downpipe, as I have seen comments that its a bit better than cheap ones? I am off to collect the new arvin exhuast from CAF this avo,so was intending to get one from there

I've had just the same problem :D .. gasket and sealant combo is good but only for short period , cos it'll blow out again after a few weeks when the heat burns the sealant away ..

So , really the best long term and cost effective solution is skimming B)

Rgs !

EDIT : Regarding the downpipe mesh ring , yes you can source it from any good muffer shop or from your local car part store ;) When i've ordered Arvin exhaust was also arrived with mounting kit package containing bolts/nuts/springs/washers and mesh ring for manifold to downpipe joint .. As said you can other this exh. mounting kit separately aswell , no need for OE parts .

combination of 1 and 2 I'd try.

and yes the pug kits are worth the extra.

Think I'm going to try and fill it with the putty stuff, then mount using gasket compound AND gaskets. If it starts blowing again I'll find somewhere that will skim the manifold, and take it off again...

205's - I soon forget why I love them when I'm not driving!
