Sump Choice On A 1.9 8v

Recommended Posts

The sump on my 1.9 is battered and I've got the option of a standard sump or an Mi one, is there any benefit to going for the Mi sump on an otherwise standard 1.9 8v?

I'm looking to get on track later on if that makes any difference.

If it's a steel Mi16 sump then it's the same as the 1.9 sump.

If it's an alloy Mi16 sump then it's got cooling fins on it that are very good for keeping the oil temp down.

If your 1.9 has an air cooler then I would'nt bother with the Mi sump. Would'nt the oil be too cold from both of these?

If you have the oil/water cooler which does do a good job of getting the oil upto temperature, then fair enough.

Nothing wrong with the tin sump though, I had one on my Mi before fitting the '6 sump.

Just noticed that you wish to track it in the future.

Just a warning, but I have witnessed an Mi with the ally sump hit the rumble's on a corner of a track. The sump got smashed, where the engine dumped its oil rather quickly. Tin sumps tend to be a bit more forgiving when they hit something.

So from that I'd probably be best with the 8v sump for durability and if it gets too hot look at getting an oil cooler?

The 1.9 8v had a cooler from the factory, depends which it is though. The factory air cooler is pants, and the water/oil cooler is only good at getting the oil upto temperature quicker IMO.

As I say, by running the Mi sump on an 8v with the air cooler you may find the oil never getting upto a decent temperature.

Personally, I'd just bung another tin sump on.
