Can't Select Third Gear/bag Of Spanners Noise

Hello!

 

On Saturday my car was fully laden with four people and a load of camping gear. Unfortunately, I seem to have broken something. I was about to set off with everyone in the car and I heard a terrible noise coming from under the bonnet. Couldn't work it out, but it was under the engine I think. Sounded like it was running with no oil, if you get me?

 

Anyway, got the car moving and the noise stopped, but now I can't select third gear. All other gears are fine, but third just won't engage. I get a crunching noise if I try to select it, and no amount of forcing will make it stick.

 

Any ideas?

 

It's a 1990 1.6 GTI XU5JA.

Sounds like the syncro has gone in third. If that is the case then you need new cones/refurbed box.

Worth checking gear sticks and clutch adjustment first
