How To Get Air Into Intercooler?

Recommended Posts

jimistdt

Right then, I want to fit an intercooler to my STDT, and the easiest option it would seem is to fit one from a 405 1.7 TD. Now, the problem is this, the 405 has a channel beneath the bonnet and above the sound-proofing that rams air into the intercoller box, unfortunatley the 205 has no such channel and I dont want to put a vent in the bonnet, and fitting the intercooler beneath the rad is really a little too complicated for lil old me. I am toying with the idea of running a duct from somewhere near the Driving lights up to in cooler and maybe swapping my bonnet for an Auto one to give me a bit more space. So I am going to throw this out to the good people on this forum and see if there are any sparks of genius that could ignite my plans. :(

i know a Rover 200 used the same engine as yours(if not then VERY similar) and this was intercooled. Maybe use parts from that? I presume the 405 intercooler is a top mount, if so then i think it would be a bit of a half measure to put it on top of your engine. You really want it up front.

the rover is front mounted. if you can find a picture of the 218 it's mounted like...vertically against the grille and bumper.

im looking to intercooler my stdt too. about an extra 12bhp <_< i was planning on doin the same way as you...auto bonet for the space, air feed from low down in the bumper. probably gonna chuck a few louvres(NOT vents) in the bonnet just to let some hot air out though, it is sitting ontop of the engine afterall. maybe some kind of heat shield between the two could help aswell with the heat sink. personally i dont really want to front mount it because of all the extra pipes

if you'r willing to do a bit of re-jigging you could lower the rad down a bit and pop a 2 or 4wd cossie ic behind the grill.

not quite as oe as using the top mount, but much more efficient in the cooling stakes being up front.

Very interesting article that Jackherer, I have read the guys stuff before and i always come away feeling much cleverer than I am. I am going to knock one of them boards up with the pipes and spend an afternoon driving about with my mate and a marker pen to see how much pressure variance exists.

Dirtdog, If you make giant strides in fitting your intercooler will you keep me posted as to which method you use? Cheers Jimi.
