Cam Pulley Shroud - Is It Needed?

Recommended Posts

macaroni

On my 1.9, the cam pulley was butchered by the previous owner and rattles at certain revs. Does anyone run their cars without this shroud or is it a necessity?

If I removed it, I would make sure all the cables in the area are suitably restrained.

Cheers,

Antony

I've sort of the same problem, when I bought my 1.9 there was no pulley cover!! my engines out at the minute to get rebuilt (eventually... :D ) but I was going to try and find a second hand one when it was ready to go in. If anyone has one i'd take off their hands..?

The cover is there mainly to stop any foreign objects being able to get down in the belt. There is no advantage at all to NOT running one, and lots of potential disasters waiting to happen. I always fit them to my engines.

I took my cover off once as it was in need of a good clean. I went for a drive while it was off and it ended up rubbing against one of the loom wires. This caused many problems (by shorting out i think) either way, theres no gain and too much risk involved unless you do a real good job of holding the wiring in place. My personnal advice is leave it on!

OK, that's pretty conclusive. I'm not looking to gain anything by leaving it off apart from the fact it rattles.

I will hunt for another one and replace it.

Thanks for the advice.

i ran mine off for 5,000 miles no problems, just zip tiee the wires etc to where the bonnet thing attach's the wing... never had one problem, not running it on my turbo engine either, more servo clearance

I don't have one on mine but I have been intending to fit a phase 2 plastic one but I have to remove the upper strut brace for it to go on so haven't done it yet.

The cambelt is getting changed in a couple of months so I'll do it then.

Graham.
